Help with Valmet 9.3x74r regulation load
I hope someone here can help. I have a Valmet 412 with 9.3x74r barrels. Up till a few weeks ago I have only shot it to 50 yds. and it shoots great both barrels at around a 1-1/2". With that same load at 75 and 100 yds the bottom barrel is dead on, but the top is 11" high. I know that you can adjust the barrels by moving the slider aling the wedge between the barrels and I have tried that. The best I can get is 8" high. I have also thies factory ammo (Norma Oryx) same thing. The test target from the factory says the barrels are regulated for S&B 286 gr ammo. I can't find any. Any sugestions.

Thanks

Please excuse me if this sounds silly but I had somehting like that happen with my Chapuis SxS.

The left barrel was all over the place. I finally scrubbed the bores like crazy with a bore brush and that did it. The patches weren't all that dirty but there must have been some crap in one of the grooves...

I have personally regulated a LOT of the Valmet 412 DR's, (50 ? ) and i've NEVER seen one that wouldn't regulate with any load that could remotely be called a hunting load.

I'd clean the bores, but i'd also look close at the bbl. to see if you don't have a problem with the adjuster... See if it isn't damaged, or come loose from the bbl. in some way..

DPM I have a Tikka 512SD (same gun essentially) which shoots very well. If you search on this forum you should find a list of my loads. If not PM me I will send you the list. I did adjust the lower barrel. It does not take much. Make sure that the soldering did not break when you adjusted yours. Mine did and I had it resoldered.
Peter.
PS. See the thread below this one on the Chapuis.

The adjuster look fine. As I move and tighten the screw it I can see the top barrel move. The reloads I have shot are

286gr Hornady over 55gr IMR4064 2325 fps
270 gr speer hot core over 56 gr IMR 4064 2350 fps

Norma factory Oryx 2313 fps

All the above loads were checked on my crony. How much adjustment is required to see noticeable results 1/16"?

DPM, the top barrel should not move. The slider moves the POI of bottom barrel. The gun should be sighted in with the top barrel. Then adjust the bottom barrel POI to match. Move the sliding ring rearward to lower and forward to raise the POI of the bottom barrel. You are correct, very small amounts of movement are needed.
Peter.

I would like to thank everyone for the help. This is what I found out over the weekend. This particular set of barrels will not shoot with the scope on. The bottom barrel will shoot great groupes and so will the top, but they will be 8-10 inches off. Using the iron sights it shoots great with reloads and factory Norma ammo. Not sure how to get it to shoot with a scope, but for now I can hunt with it and feel confident out to 100 yds.

Thanks again

DPM glad you have made some progress. I have only ever shot my Tikka with the scope on. In your case you will have to develop a different handload that will allow the barrels to shoot together Here is mine:

Many years ago, i was the Valmnet distributor for the state of Alaska. I sold a lot of Valmets and regulated a lot of DR's, including "custom" bbl sets for customers. I never saw even one DR bbl set that acted that way.

I always regulated the bbls at 100 yards, with the scope on, then fireing with the scope off. I never saw a big difference in regulation... As a side note, i will say that most of the guns i regulated had lighter scopes on them, like Leupolrs 1.5x5's ect...

Anyway, glad you made some progress...

Yeah DM, that is why I included a photo of my rifle. Scope size (or rather weight) may have an effect.
Peter.

That seems unusual to me as well. I have a Tikka 512SD and it regulates fine using the wedge and with a scope on as well.

When testing, are you shooting it Barrel 1 - first shot, Barrel 2 - second shot, reload, then Barrel 1 - third shot, Barrel 2 - fourth shot?

Or shooting Barrel 1 x 2 shots, before shooting Barrel 2 x 2 shots?
