Is there a "the powder for the 9,3x74r"?
Some cartridges have an affinity for a certain powder; for example RL15 and the 416 rem mag.

Is there a specific powder that is known to work really well in the 9,3x74r?

Thanks,

Mike

4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.

11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.

I use 65.5gr of ADI 2209 and 286gr Hornady interlock. The loads are compressed.

I elected to use 250 gr. Hornady GMXs as I hunt some areas that are lead-free only and don't want to continually sight-in an O/U rifle.

My all-time, hands-down favorite is AA-4350 followed (in order of preference) by #2 IMR-4350, #3 H-4350 and #4 VVN-140.

Tried many powders over the years. H4831 always came out as best.

Andre;

I bet to differ with you on your opinion that 3 shots do not make a group. In your photographs above, the first photograph shows what appears to be 3 shots all touching each other. Everyone I know would agree that those 3 shots are a "GROUP".

Thank you for your contribution concerning 4831.

To clear a misunderstanding.

My 3 pics above are all 4-shot groups (2x2 from each barrel) with my FN-Browning CCS25 double rifle.

"My" citation regarding group value concerns single barreled rifles (bolt action essentially), not double rifles, whose accuracy I assess by firing an even number of shots, taking both barrels into account.

I get top performance with IMR 4064. Varget and Reloader 15 are also good.

It real hard to beat H-4831, or IMR-4831 and RL-15 runs a close second in most any double rifle caliber.

My Chapuis likes 54 grains of R-15 and Nosler 286 grain Partitions. I've shot silver dollar size six shot groups at 100 yards with it several times. It's my current go to elk rifle and load.

Factory Seller & Bellot ammo shot best in my 9.3x74R Dickson. (285g bullet at 2280 fps)

I struggled to find a handload that equalled as good a load. I tried 6 different powders with poor results. Then I broke down a factory cartridge and weighed the powder. I searched the reloading data for a powder at "that weight" that would give the same velocity. Everything pointed to RL-15. I tried RL-15 at the same weight as the factory S&B and obtained similar velocity at as good or better accuracy.

Buckstix,

Very helpful, thanks. Do you recall the powder charge?

Hello Mike_Dettorre,

Keep in mind this is "my" rifle and you might want to start lower.

The factory charge was 57 grains = 2280 fps.

I loaded 56.5 grains RL-15 = 2267 fps and 57 grains RL-15 = 2275 fps using 270g Speer SP bullets. Results were respectively 3-3/4" and 4-5/8" 4-shot groups at 100 yards with iron sights. Factory ammo shot 4-5/8" groups at 100 yards, also with iron sights.
