Thought s on having barrels regulated on an o/ u?

I have a Winchester o/u in .270. I've read in several places that the barrels were not regulated by the factory. Range testing has proven same. Can this be done after-market, so to speak, by a competent gunsmith?

I also have a .270 Browning o/u, unfired, anyone know if it may have been regulated?

Based on my experience, 101 double rifles typically need regulating. The gunsmith at Champlin Arms would be my choice.

If your .270 Browning is of the CCS25 type, normally it will shoot very well.

JJ at Champlin regulated one of the Winchester rifles for me 3 or 4 years ago. JJ warned me that the barrels were hard soldered and would require more work (money) than the soft soldered ones.

He had to drill out the solder between the barrels and redo the joint with soft solder before he could re-regulate. As I recall, it was roughly $100 more money than the normal charge.

Worked great. The rifle shot well after the work. They are decent rifles for the money, but rather heavy for caliber.

Exactly, JJ is the only person I would trust for that job.

However, you could try several different kinds of factory ammo or handloads first, you might find something it shoots good.

I'd call JJ before I sent the rifle to him. I don't think he is doing the Winchesters any longer, could be wrong! If he will still do them I have one chambered for 9.3X74R that will print 1/2 inch groups from either barrel, but those individual barrel groups centers are 4 inches apart in elevation and two inches apart horizonally at 50 yds with the bottom barrel very low, and to the left of point of aim, and the top barrel high, and to the right of point of aim, so needs re-regulating!

It is not that the Winchesters were not regulated, it was just done wrong by people who only knew how to regulate a shotgun. They placed the barrels in a jig and used lasers to point at a target and hard soldered the wedges in place. This works for shotgns but is a disaster with a rifle! I think Sabatti found that out the hard way!
