hidalgoRifle is Ready
I've got my load worked up for my Heym .470, Northfork 500 gr FPS over RL-15. I leave for Zimbabwe in a couple weeks for my first ever elephant hunt and my first hunt with a double rifle. I've shot over 300 rounds with the Heym 89B and could not be happier with it. The iron sights have been a challenge but I feel fairly confident, I've got a Docter Red Dot sighted in but don't think I'll need to use it. I shot and axis deer here in Texas at about 60 yards last week so at least the rifle has been bloodied.
Thanks to everyone on this site who gave me advice.

The more I know, the less I wonder !
Awesome. 470 Heym was my first double as well. Have a great hunt. Who you going with?
Mac
Welcome to AR, and good luck on the hunt! You probably won't shoot an Elephant much beyond 25 yards, so you'll be fine.
Let's see some pics of that 89B. I've been dying to see some better pictures of that rifle

Engraving pattern is Grade 1.
The wood is what I call "Best Grade."
Yes, you can find different grain-flows, patterns and shades of contrast, but it doesn't get any better.

"Best Grade" is an understatement! I may have seen wood equal to these rifles, but I doubt better.

AtkinsonThat wood is too nice for this old curmudgeon,Id be inclined not to walk through the grass with it..In reality Id probably grab it by the barrels and whip brass and bush with it day one and get it over with..

hidalgoThis was my first time hunting elephant and I found it to be one of the best hunts I've ever done. I really wanted and had practiced for brain shot however when it came down to it we had great bull 35 yards away with 7 other bulls around him so I took the heart/lung shot. First shot was perfect 2nd shot was about a foot back. I was surprised the the shots seemed to almost knock the large bull down as I broke open the gun and started to run away from us the PH was yelling shoot him again, I then found out how hard it is to hit the spine or hip on a rapidly departing elephant 2 more reloads and I broke spine and was they able to close and kill him. It was not the classic one shot to the brain and drop that I had dreamed of but he was magnificent bull dead on the ground. I was surprised that he only travelled around a 100 ft from where was when I took the first shot.
I told my PH I thought he got a little work up yelling at me "shot again, shot again". He then pointed out we were less than 50 yards from the Limpopo river and South Africa and was consented that the bull might make the border and be lost to us.
The rifle performed wonderfully although it does have a few scratches now. I only recovered one Northfork solid and except for rifling marks it looks perfect.
I went to the hunt knowing would not be able to bring back the ivory but after seeing the almost perfectly matched 48 and 49 pound tusks I really want them by my fireplace.

Pictures, or it didn't happen, and you'll be required to forget it.
