Ghost ring on a Double

I am looking at a double (475 #2, not that it matters) and am concerned that when the reading glasses fairy arrives I will have trouble with the irons. Since any type of scope is out of the question I thought about a ghost ring peep mounted way back at the start of the barrels to give a longer sight plane.

Has anyone done this or know where I could look for examples of this?

go to the search function and type in peep sight,you will see some previous threads that will have some information,another idea to consider would be to mount a red dot sight on your double,this is a fairly new development and seems to work good,I have a Docter optik on my new soon to be in my hands 450-400 Heym.

I got to shoot Antlers 450/400 in a Heym with the Docter site, it's the best option IMO of anything above open sites. I sits lower on the rib than anything I've seen on the market, a must add-on for my double. Although Philip A. has a great set-up of a peep on his DR I'd look hard at the Docter before a peep site.

Recknagel(I know I butchered the spelling) sells that sight for the claw base. They also make several others that are left blank on the bottom for fitting to different actions/mounts.

You can get their catalog from NECG. I received my catalog this week. It's 50 pages of high-gloss gun-porn!

There is a company that make peep sights out of steel for military surplus AK-47 and sks etc. It has wind age adjustment,and screw in peeps. I measured the rib on my Merkel and they machined me one to match for 80 bucks. We used a mill to drill the two mounting holes dead center of the rib. I filed the standing rear flat and left a fold up for back up. I made some spacers for elevation. It works great all for 150 bucks, it looks OK and is stout as hell. I would not do it to a more expensive rifle but on the Merkel its fine.

That said I am going with a Dr optic some day.

How does the Dr mount? Is it enough to drill 2 holes in the 1/4rib, or is there a need for a base plate?

I shot Rusty's at the last shoot and hoot, and found it faster and more positive than my peep.
I never lost the dot even in full recoil

The Dr Optik uses a baseplate mount. On the Heym the only mods to the rib are very minor - a single small hole centered on the rib and a narrow cut on each side of the rib. The mount that I got thru Heym is a quick detach mount and it seems to return to zero pretty well.

Search on this forum and you will find some good pics that new_guy has posted.

I haven't used it a great deal yet, but it may be the ticket for certain situations. If you can't see the sights, like Rusty or for trailing big brown fuzzies into the alders - my reason for getting it.

I adapted an XO peep to my Chapuis 45-70. I drilled and tapped the rib about 3/8" from the end. Filed flats on the peep thread 90 degrees from the existing flats. Drilled and tapped the barrel face for a number 8 screw to lock the peep. Used a nylon locking screw cut flush with the barrel face because this hole lines up with the lever hold open release plunger. I also installed an XO white post front sight. I now have elevation adjustment on the rear sight and windage on the front. The only off the shelf item in this conversion was the .220 X 64 tap required for the peep.

I had a double with an XO adapted to fit. It was the best sighting system I have ever seen for a double. I like the e-sights, but hate to depend on batteries or electronics in the field.
