Beautiful working rifle I cannot yet afford. Terrible description.

Buyer has to let me shoot it just once as a finders fee.

Nice rifle, unnecessarily heavy!

That was the problem back in the day, the 450/400 were built on the heavier actions. But 11 lbs isn't that heavy (I'm a big guy), so the recoil is probably wonderfully low.

Pretty tempting. I might be tempted to buy it except a F1 tornado f'ed up my roof tiles last weekend here in Austin (Lakeway)

I had a hammer 450-400 that went 13lbs 6 oz. But there was little to no recoil. Like brand new but just too heavy.

That price seems very competitive to me. I saw one about 20 per cent dearer nine years ago - and it might have even been off face!

As I recall it had beautiful balance, probably because of the 24-inch barrels, which are a tad short considering the marginal ballistics of the calibre.

It says Merkel barrels....a retrofit?

Thats a good rifle if the bores check out. I bet they are Krupp barrels. Cabelas guys probably got confused...

Evan if the rifle weighs 11, it will be well balanced.

Of the different doubles I've had, my Jeffery was the most accurate. Most if not all of Jeffery's double rifles were built by Leonard from Birmingham.

I hope someone here bought it, it's gone.

Don't forget my finders fee in the first post!

Both my Jefferys and Army Navy had heavy barrels and std. large actions, at 11 pounds, they shot extremely well, held well off hand and balanced it seemed to hide the weight?? Never bothered me but probably would today as mother nature creeps up on one sooner or later. That weight really kept the recoil down..Such things are trade offs for sure.

I packed mine all over Africa at 80 years old..today Id appreciate less weight butt then at my present age recoil is a consideration..Guess I need a gun barrier.

My 450/400 weighs 9 pounds without scope and I wouldn't want it heavier. Recoil is just a heavy shove.

CURIOUS...what was the asking price...it was down before I saw this post??

I sold mine years ago and have been kicking myself ever since....it was cut too short for me to be comfortable...but a lace on pad would have solved that problem in a heartbeat!! Mine was not what I considered heavy...what a great caliber and all around double!!

I have seen Cal's comments on declining prices on UK doubles....my predictions of 5 years ago are finally ringing true...it took a while!!

Cheers,

Colin,
Thanks very much, INTERESTING!!
That is exactly what I sold my Jeffrey 450-400 3" for in 96-97 and thought I was in hog heaven!!
I paid little more than half that in 92-93, my first double rifle, when preparing for my elephant hunt with John Sharp. I finally bought a nice Manton 470 from OZ and took that to Zim... so later I figured I didn't need the one that was to short for me and I didn't need two....when a fellow from our local gun show approached me with an offer>>> the rest is history!!...and he is a great new found friend too....we call it "Our Jeffrey" and I finally got a chance to fire it!!
I guess this is the roller coaster I predicted from the Double Bubble!!...five years ago??
CHEERS,

It was actually $12,999.99.

Well, that's still a pretty handsome price...and is about the 60- 70% of peak prices that Cal speaks of!!
