D R HunterRespectfully...
Friends,
We have many a learned poster here on AR. And we
have many who desire to know more and admit to
knowing "not so much". I am one of those! I believe
we all want to know what is correct and express that.
In that vein I
respectfully wish to make a point. Please
look at this photo:
W.J. Jeffery DoubleYou clearly see the spelling of the principal's name,
W.J. Jeffery. If you have one from this company,
in short you have a
JEFFERY rifle, not a Jeffery
s, nor
any other variation. You might say, " I selected a
rifle from Jeffery's company.". But come selling time,
it's wrong to title your add Jeffery
s 450/400, just
as you would not type Winchester
s pre '64 30-06.
You WOULD type Winchester pre '64 30-06. I am not
trying to give an English lesson, I am stressing that
the principal's name, JEFFERY ends in Y not S. I apol-
ogize if this comes across in a way that sounds arro-
gant to any degree. I never see this error being made
with the SEARCY name, but with the JEFFERY name
it's common in deed.
Best regards to all,
D/R Hunter

jvw375DR Hunter,
I owe you a cold one! Couldn't have said it better myself!

dpcdIt's been a long winter for all of us.
What if you have a "Colt's" revolver? That is how Col Colt stamped all of the revolvers produced there and his name was not Colt's.. So, of course, you could have a Jeffery's rifle. Add the apostrophe and you are good.
Far more egregious sins are committed here than that.

BiebsI imagine those that are in a position to actually afford a Jeffery are probably successful and intelligent enough to know how to spell the name, but I may be wrong.

GrenadierSo, if I had more than one, would I have several Jeffrey, several Jefferys, several Jeffries, several Jeffreys', or several Jeffries' ?
If I held a Winchester, one of the Winchester rifles, i.e. Winchester's, and it belonged to a man named Jeffrey, wouldn't I have Jeffrey's rifle?
And if Jeffrey owned a few Jeffrey rifles wouldn't those be Jeffery's Jefferys?
Maybe they should all be referred to as Jeffri.

MJinesSo they are not Hollands and Hollands either? Or is it with an ampersand? And is it Westley Richard? This is all very disconcerting.

dpcdTrue story; a couple of years ago I built a 404 Jeffery. Right before engraving the name on, I decided to double check the spelling. I grabbed a box of Hornady brass which was plainly marked "404 JEFFREY" and I proceeded to engrave that on the rifle. Son of a bitch; I realized right after I was done that Hornady was wrong. Oh well.

Not as much as on a
SEARCYS!!! *Again chaps, not intended as an English lesson.
Does a man type "I just bought a BUTCH SEARCY
S rifle."? No. He types, "I just bought a BUTCH SEARCY
rifle." The principal's name ends in Y not S, just
like JEFFERY.
{ Or, just like
JEFFERY ' S does!!!!!
}
