I voted for color case.


I would get color case if at all possible. The fact that no 2 peices are alike really appeals to me, and would lend to the "custom" or "bespoke" feel of the rifle.

That being said, I would like coin if I am going to have ALOT of really nice engraving.

I think I might have a hard time making up my mind, but I think I will always perfer color case hardend finish.


In short, unless I were getting an engraving masterpeice, I would go color case.

I put CCH.

However, if I was ordering a Holland Royal,
it would be coin as it lends itself better
the engraving on a Holand Royal IMHO.

I am sending my Ondrus/Wickliffe off to CPA this week for a bit of engraving and his beautiful CCH. He produces the gorgeous ripple/swirl effect like the original Stevens.

i voted coin as i think it shows a nice engraving better.

it has got to be the worst and ugliest american restock on that manton , beaver forend and a monte carlo roll over cheek piece, the grip area is looking like he used two different shapes for it and just tried to combine it into one grip angel, with horrific results.
further more the checkering of the pistol grip close to the gripcap has got to be the worst layout i ever did see.

Damn couldent the stock maker just have killed the old warrior and let him die in peace, instead of degrading him like that.

Unfortunately, there is a very limited selection of stockers in the states who can get the style correct on a British gun. I've had two restocks done on British double rifles, one I went for the best and the other I settled and still regret it.

My third is off now at the best one in the US, it's going to be costly but done right.

I voted for CCH.

If its British you want, send it to Lon Paul.

We are blessed in Australia with having a couple of superb stockers
- I think 2 of them are mentioned in graeme Wrights book.

Would easily hold their own in the UK.

I hope you are having 26" bbls put on it.

CC looks too much like an old Sharps or Remington. Coin for me.

Come on guy's!, Last time I checked, the stockmaker works for the customer. You don't have to have good taste to buy a double.

I'd vote for the color case hardening.

That is so true. I once criticised a Shotgun that had been restocked - in a very light piece of wood. THE GUY WHO OWNED IT DIDN'T TELL ME HE HAD SUPPLIED THE WOOD !!!

As far as action finish goes, I think CCH could hide a multitude of engraving sins. Or at least dress up an action without any (or very little) engraving at all.

I very much like CCH as I could get a very pretty or even beautifull action without paying a (possibly) huge premium JUST for the hand engraving.


Personally, unless one was getting a really nice engraving job, a coin finish might (would) remind me of a Stoeger or a Baikal. In short, I think that unless it is very well finished and/or very well engraved, coin or nickle could (or in my opinion WOULD) look "cheap".


I am a traditionalist. When I can afford to, I like to do, or have things the way they were in the days of yore. I know they did coin or nickle finished receivers back then. But to me, CCH harkens back to a less hurried era, when "hand-made" was taken for granted. When things were done the "right" way, not the easy way or the cheap or inexpensive way.


I'm not trying to sound like a snob, just my humble opinion.

I have to admit, that coin finish really sets off a DR with a monte carlo stock.

It really depends on the engraving. The examples above are English scroll and as such looks appropreate with Color case hardening.

If a rifle has deep relief and / or game scenes then French grey is more appropreate.

Guess that the Manton was case hardened as new and after a lot of work it went coin finish.
the Purdey seems to have been re case hardened recently...

I would order a case hardened double, then use it a lot, finally getting a coin finish apperance.

But to make things easier, as Confiucious says " a picture's worth a thousand words" so maybe this will help" Six rounds, factory and my handloads). Maybe you can post a target from your double?
