VC 600 NE

26" barrels weighs in just under 14lb and shoots bloody well!!!

Now just finalising my loads, have got the 900 Woodleigh upto 2100fps , and that sure does wake you up.

Barrels are crossing at this velocity, 1950 seems to be it.

Bring it on CMS in Sept double tuskless!!!!!

Chris ,
In OZ we can't get a lot of powders, so experimenting a little with the ADI 2213sc and 2209. I did have an old 1lb tin of IMR 4831 and Cals load of 160 gr was the bomb! It chrono'd at 2100fps in my gun. Belted me up quite well. Went to the 2213sc and 156 - 157gr is regulating at around 1950 . No filler on these loads required.
I am now going to load some CEB 900 solids and use some 2209 at around 140gr with filler and see if the recoil is a little more palatable!

Nick, thanks. I loaded some up for when my 600N single is complete and i would be interested in getting your chrono'd results for different loads.

Very classic looking rifle... except looks like a red toothbrush collided with your foresight

Would love to hold it sometime.

Chris,
I know it's not kosher with the fibre optic front sight, but I find it so much faster and easier to shoot than the conventional brass bead. When your engaging the Zambezi ladies well inside of 20m , you need to just put the front sight on the spot real QUICK!!
I do have a conventional file cut brass bead as a spare in the grip cap trap door.
If your ever in oz, your welcome to come for a shot .

It really ain't that bad, it doesn't have a lot of Muzzle rise, just a big push back.
I think I fired nearly 30 rounds one session, that was enough though!!!
The muzzle blast is pretty awesome too.
The chrony got blown away a couple of times!
I've got it out now at 14 feet in front of muzzles.

Chris,
The DD was frightening!! Sent me back about 3m and I did a full 360 spin , ended up down on one knee with the VC held up in one hand!!!

It was a little like Saeeds you tube videos of the TRex!!!

I learnt that I must have my trigger finger well over the front trigger, not just the tip as that is when you strum the back one , and , KA POW!!!!!!!!
It's been a real learning curve.
Makes my 500 double feel like a 222.!

Here is my take on what happened to you as the same thing happened to me years ago. I refer to the use of "old" powder. I shot some old 4831 and experienced 2100+ fps. I was told this: over time powder will lose moisture content. So when one loads (say, 160 grains) the weight of the powder is increased due to the loss of the weight of the moisture.

I shoot my .600 every week with 160 grains of IMR 4831 and average 1900 fps from 26-inch barrels and have so for years.

Any others withs to chime in on this topic I would welcome your comments.

PPS. At the AK shoot last weekend a gent had my .600 double. I really don't know how this happens but he fired 320 grains of 4831 and 1800 grains of lead. It, too, woke him up!

Cal,
The tin of IMR I had was still sealed and had been unopened for probably 20 years.
It seems your explanation seems to be plausible . I will load some with 155gr and see what we get. At 2100 fps the gun is reaching my upper limits of recoil tolerance!!!

Wicked Nice, Congrats on your purchase

I have Fiber Optic front sights on both of my heavy bolt guns.. (never thought of putting one one my double you got the wheels turning) But have changed them out to green instead of the usual red, the bead really jumps out at you. Depending on the diameter of the the fiber optic rod they are very easy to purchase and change out..

I am a convert to the fibre optic beads on all my open sighted firearms. I used one on my VC 500 last year on 2 ele and it was great!
Having one installed on my new WEstley RIchards 500 as well!

It feels less than the 14 lbs believe it or not. It balances real well, and I will be using a sling not African carry so I think it will be ok. If Mark Sullivan can do it.......

I'll experiment with lighter charges of the old 4831 out of curiosity and for recoil acclimatisation! But I'm leaning towards a reduced charge of faster powder with filler.
I've got 2 months before I'm off to Zim so should have it sorted by then.

I will,post the targets soon,the gun shoots incredibly well. I shot it today and have finalised my loads. It shoots woodleigh's softs and solids , as well as CEB to the same POI with different loads! The CEB I,m using a lesser amount of faster powder with filler.

I didn't get the factory to drill/ tap for a docter optic sight. I have one on one of my doubles at the moment and am experimenting with it. Whilst my eyes are ok I prefer the open sights with the fibre optic front bead, which Jerome fitted at the factory as part of my list of bespoke extras.
I do like the docter though, It is great on my Blaser, and I plan on using it on a driven boar hunt in Europe.

Good to hear Nick. Hope you enjoy the DVD's and the varoius hunting.

Regard the Doctor - yes it should be very good on driven boar hunts in Europe. However, I am not sure how far away the boar can be before you want a scope or a aimpoint ! I am planning to mount a Micro Aimpoint on my R8 for the driven boars !
