GarByNorth Fork Cups vs FP solids
Does anybody have an idea the difference in penetration of the NF Cup Pt. vs the Flat point? I'm taking the Cups and Woodleigh softs for buff in 2 weeks....and I'm curious if that's a good combo. Should I load up some flats too?
Thanks.

500grainsFor buff all you need is cups. very deep penetrating, but good sized wound channel. Save the softs for plains game. The flat noses will be best for head shots and for departing rump shots, but the cups will serve you well for those applications too.
For elephant and hippo, stick to flat nose solids.

Head TraumaI spoke with Mike at NF on this topic last week. He told me the cup point is a bufffalo bullet par excellance, hits like a soft point, penetrates like a solid. Mike agreed with 500 grains, use the cup points on bufflao and the flat points on elephant and hippo.

GarByThanks, gents. My hunts for this trip include buff and plains game only. Sounds like the choices will be fine. Maybe something like elephant or hippo next time.

Be very careful if you use the cup point on a broadside shot with another buff behind, you will be paying for 2 buff because the cup point WILL penetrate completely on broadside shot.
I shot one buff with 375 NF then shot the buff from behind into back with insurance shot with 470 NE with cup point and it penetrated all the way from back to bottom of left leg.
The 375 penetrated buff walking towards me straight on at 90 yards and penetrated to the middle of the stomach. Retained 285 grains with picture perfect expansion.

GarByThanks, gi. I'm taking some Woodleigh softs for the first round if in a herd situation. IMike from NF told me that the cups typically give 75-80% of the penetration of the fp solids. I think I have a good combo put together....we'll see in less than 2 weeks!

AndyGi,
Were you using a NF bonded soft point in your 375 or a Cup Point?
If you have pictures of those two bullets Id love to see them.
If you have never posted photos before, you could send me a PM and I will post it for you.
Andy
GarBy, I had Woodleighs for softs first shot backed up by Cup Pooints. I loaded 108 H4831 is softs and 110 H4831 in CP. The Cp hit about 1" above the softs. Did not kill buff with 470, juist insurance shot on downed buff.
Andy, I actually shot my buff with 375 NF softs and 71 rx 15 2625+- fps. penetration was more then I thought. shot straight on and bullet wound up in stomach picture perfect. Weighed 285 gr. I don't know how to post picture, I will take dightal picture probably by weekend and send to you for posting if you don't mind. Buff was old bull, 36" spread, I am thrilled with my first buff.
Will post notes I took on hunt later. All I can say is that Africa is great!!!!!!! Will have to go back next year. Will go later in the year, was in Kilembaro valley, grass was 8 & 10' tall, usually burnt this time of year, but was still green.
I emailed mike with NF hoping he would make soft point for 470 NE, he said the market would be too small. I am so impressed with his bullets accuracy and toughness, I bought some for 308 win- 165 gr and 7mm rem mag- 160 gr.
In my 375HH CZ with Brockamn stock, I shot my first group from bench rest 3 shots in under 1/2". You seem to get more velocity because of less friction. His 300 gr solids FP shot to same point of impact as the softs.
The PH I used is sold on Swift A frame, he was very impressed with the 300 375. I will probably send him some 416 to try, he has 416 rem & 470 NE. I gave him the few cup points I had left for the 470.
