Do they work? Are they worth the expense?
Comments please.

dirklawyerGuys on the forum will tell you that they can tell a difference between the mercury tube and plane old lead added. I can not feel any difference. Add a lb of lead and get a 10% recoil reduction.

470EvansI would get a smaller caliber if I needed mercury in the buttstock.

ShowbartWhat expense? They're cheap! And they work. C&H is the best, at MPC Sports. They balance out many guns too.
So what does the wrench do? Tightens up a rubber washer to hold the reducer in place?

YUP - had one once -- threw it away - i alway found that i carried a gun alot and shot it once or twice. Never noticed recoil when shooting at game, sure noticed it after carrying it around for 12 or 15 miles a day, that extra pound weighs a ton at the end of the day
Thanks guys. I didn't realize that they were so cheap. I didn't say I needed the recoil reducer, but I am thinking about changing the balance a bit.

Will,
That's what I'm thinking. It doesn't cost much to experiment.
I've done quite a bit more research since I posted this question and realize now that it is easy and cheap to give this a try.

Better use the Mercury for rectum thermometers

As that type of metal doesn't have any thing to do with classic fire arms.
Or buy your self a RPG 7 (Ручной, RuÄnoj Противотанковый Protivotankovyj Гранатомёт)

ShowbartThe threaded screwwrench is for install/removal. You might need to order 2 reducers to see which works best. Will, whether you know it or not you own, for now, a C&H reducer

Showbart,
What do you mean "two"? Two installed at the same time or two different weights?

Actually I was only the go-between. I guessed that it had one, though I didn't look. No wonder that thing is so damn heavy.

Do you remember which weight you used?

But how much did they weigh? 12 ounces? 8 ounces? Do you remember? Are there two of them in there or you tried two different weight reducers?

ShowbartNo, Begno should get 2 sizes, if his gun will accomodate 2, and try each then pick the best.
I like these guys cuz the reducers are very well priced.
https://1977274750.monstercommercesites.com/index.asp?P...IEWCATS&Category=245The older Heym drawbolt holes are +/-11/16" so the just the one 8oz unit from C&H will work. It really helped that Heym. A 9.9 lb 470 is no fun to shoot. Plus Heym redesigned the buttstock dimensions to a fuller size. It didn't add much if any weight but they are more nicely stocked. Perfect PH rifle for the PH that lies between budget minded and fine English.
Let's see. 10.28 lbs. minus 8 ounces = 9.78 lbs. Now we're talking!
Even 60 years ago H&H was trying to make 9 lb. 6 oz. 465's, according to Taylor.

ShowbartDid you shoot it? It was fecking brutal! A 9 3/4 lb 470? You're sick! But it was too slightly stocked. And it's a very thin action, truly svelte.
According to Taylor? Well it must be true.

More weight than lead, Cheaper than Mercury.

The person I bought it for did it for the investment (I have it on gunbroker).
Someone asked "how does it shoot?"
So I couldn't resist and took it to the range. Now I can't see that well, surely not like when I was a kid, and don't shoot at elephant over 25 yards so what a 470 is doing at 50 or a hundred yards is quite irrelevant in my case.
I used my 500 gr. North Fork FPS handloads at about 2175 fps from a standing rest, and the right and left at 25 yards were touching in a horizintal figure eight, the right barrel on the right and the left on the left. I was plenty excited.
It is quite the shooter; much, much better than the other Heym 470 I had once. If I had the bucks I would buy it for myself.

ShowbartOf course you didn't shoot it w/out the reducer, my mistake. But before it was installed it was unpleasant. My Demas was a pussycat in comparison even after the Heym was weighted.

AtkinsonThey really take the balance out of a good rifle IMO..I wouldn't have them in my gun, especially a good double.

Depends on the rifle. I have one in my Merkel .500 and it actually helps to balance the rifle better, not to mention the recoil.
Mike
Mike,
What weight reducer did you use?

MJinesWhatever one Merkel put in there.

I really have no clue.
Mike
Got any idea what your Merkel weighs?

zimbabweMy Merkel 470 came with a solid steel weight in the butt held in place by a clip across the end. When we installed a Decellerator and reattached the clip it sheared after several rounds and tried to push thru the hollow Decellerator. I suppose the original solid buttplate held it in place. I was in Zimbabwe when I noticed the hump in the Decellerator so I just removed the weight. Never got around to re-installing it and was going to put a mercury reducer in but the gun shot well without it and I rather liked the slightly muzzle heavy feel to it. Sold the gun with the rod removed. Never weighed the rod. Have had mercury reducers in several doubles and liked the reduction in recoil they produce.
