.411 405 Win bullets in 450/400
Hello All,

I have a K-gun double in 450/400. I've been able to get Barnes TSX to shoot as well in it as the Hornady ammo.

I would like to try loading 300 grain 405 Win bullets to use as a general practice round/ lighter hunting load.

I remember reading on one of the forums that reasonble accuracy (for a double rifle) can be had using the "70% rule" for a given caliber in doubles (i.e. using a bullet that is aprox 70% of the weight of the bullets used to regulate with, keeping the same velocity as the original loading). At least I think that was it.

Anyway, i'm looking for info as to:
pet loads, pressure problems, velocities, problems encountered, accuracy, etc.

I'll probably post this same question on some of the other forums as well.

Thanks in advance

Regards,
Longfeather

I've used the Hornady 300 grain spire points and flat nose bullets pretty extensively. I start with the same powder load for 400 grain bullets and adjust from there. Had a good load going with RL 15 and filler, then had some stock work (oil drawn from stock and then stock refinished) and the RL 15 loads started crossing. I just tried IMR 4831 for the first time and got perfect regulation. No filler in the 4831 loads.

Oh, and the loads clock at just over 2000 fps. My rifle is a 55 cordite tropical, and 400 grainers are usually at 1975 or so. Interesting the 300's don't go faster, but they are fine for plinkers and I'm sure very low pressure.

I use the Hornady 300 gr round nose bullets in my 450/400 double with either 50 gr 5744 or 83 gr of IMR4831 with good results. I also like thier 210 gr 41 mag bullets with 50 gr of 5744.

The above says it all. I do the same with my Harrison and Hussey .450-400 3-inch. A full load of IMR 4831--80 grains in this rifle as it was regulated for 55 grains of cordite) and the 300-grain .411 work just fine and make for a bit less expense.
