Recoil Energy Math Formula
Who can post the math formula to calculate how
much recoil one will experience with a given rifle
weight, bullet weight, bullet velocity, bullet
caliber, and what ever else is involved? Thanks!

Lots of people talk about "recoil energy" but few have heard of "recoil velocity" !!
There have been some comments of shooters liking the 375H&H more than the 338Win ,even though the 338 has lower recoil enegry.
The answer is that the 338 has higher recoil velocity .
Perhaps someone has the formulas for both.

The formula for calculating the free recoil energy of a rifle is as follows:

RE = (½ x (RW/GC)) x (((BW x BMV) + (PW x PGV)) ÷ (RW x 7000))^2

Where:

RE = Free recoil energy in foot-pounds.
RW = Rifle weight in pounds
GC = 32.174 (the gravitational constant for earth in feet per second per second)
BW = Bullet weight in grains
BMV = Muzzle velocity of bullet in feet per second
PW = Powder weight in grains
PGV = 4,700 (a generally – although not universally - accepted constant for powder gas velocity in feet per second)
7000 = Number of grains per pound
^2 means "squared"

What that formula does NOT take into account however, is the way that recoil energy is transferred to the body or in other words, "perceived recoil". The shape of the stock and how it fits the individual GREATLY influences how that energy is transferred.

Take for instance, two rifles of the exact same weight, in the same caliber, shooting the same load. One has a 2" dowel for a buttstock, the other has a standard shaped buttstock with a buttplate that is 3" wide and 7" from top to bottom. Which do you think will be more pleasant to shoot, even though they are generating the exact same amount of recoil energy and velocity?

This is one of the reasons I've always said that the fit of the rifle is more important than the weight of the rifle in terms of mitigating recoil.

My perceived recoil formula is as follows

(RC500NE)+(TFL)+(RSISM500NEDRA)*3=DBRF+SOMJF

RC500NE= Rifle Caliber 500NE
TFL=Too Frack’n Light, if 500 NE Rifle weight less than 15 pounds
RSISM500NEDRA= Rusty Suckered Into Shooting Mike’s 500 NE Double Rifle Again
DBRFR= Dirty Brass’n Rass’n Frack’n Rifle
SOMJF =Smile On Mike Jines’ Face

Eeker
