Well, this double rifle thing is going to turn me crazy..today I put a scope for the first time, all my previous shooting was with open sights, I thought I will improve a lot...but not !!!

I was more or less the same accuracy than with open sights..

Details

Scope: Leupold V-III 1,75-6x32
Ammo: Norma Vulkan 232 gr
Target: 20 cm diameter (7,87")

My first two shots at 100 yards



The distance between both shots was 15 cm = 5,9"
The left shot was down and to the right.

I move the turret down and shot again two more times with both barrels. The right barrel is on the zero but the left one continues hitting down and to the right. The geater distance between left and right barrel shots was on the third shot of both barrels with a distance between shots of 20 cm = 7,8"





Well I think that I can hunt with it. My conclusions that most of you already must "been there done that" before I, is that shooting with a double has nothing to do with a bolt rifle, accuracy is much more difficult to achieve, the only thing in common is that both type of guns shoots bullets but is like comparing croosbows and bows because both of them shoot arrows..

Shooting those 232 pills is much more fun than shooting the 286 grainers.

In total I shot 17 times in two hours and it was a little tiring the last two or three shots.

If you want to kill something nothing like my old scoped 30-06, but if you enjoy more than just the killing there is nothing compared to carry a light short double. It's a beatiful gun to hunt with. I think I will never be able to shoot the second shot faster than with my 30-06, that back trigger is tough to find and pull in a hurry....maybe with more practice I will be able to master it.

But the joy of doubles, at least so far for me, is that is like discovering a completely new world....like when I discovered whisky after years of drinking beer !!

I'do your initial scope work at 50 yards.

Easier to hold steady on the same Point of Aim.

Was the gun regulated with the lighter bullet? If not try the regulation ammo before you give up.

I will try that tomorrow. Indeed it was difficult to see clearly and hold on that small black zero the target has...

I think (hope) that with reloding my shooting will be more consistent.

I have some RL15 and some Sierra 250 grainers that before where 375 caliber but that with a special tool a friend took them from .375 to .366

Get hold of some WHITE Stickers -

the paper one's you put through a printer or the round one's you buy on a roll - if you use the printer one's, they are good as they can be cut to size.

Put a WHITE Paper sticker that you have cut in a SQAURE Shape in the middle of the Black.
you do this for 2 reasons.
1. THE scope recticle is Black (unless it is an illuminated one) and the black cross hairs show up better on the white.
2. By using a square one, you can see when you are holding in the centre of the target
as the white on the outside of the cross hairs is the same.

Combine that with bringing it closer to 50 yards and you will make life a lot easier.


I also strongly agree with the others to use the bullets the gun was regulated with.

Also, with double rifle's, only ever change ONE thing at once if changing loads or the gun specs - ie primer, powder, bullet weight, adding scope etc. If you change two things at once and it all turns to shit, how do you know which of the things you changed caused it ?

So, assuming you went from 286gns to the 232gns AND added the scope for the first time,
which of these caused the bullets to impact where they did - assuming that you were getting good regulation in the first place ?????

Do you know what velocity you are getting with 232 gr bullets?

I do not own a DR but from what i have read & discussed with friends on AR your barrels are crossing . I suspect that your accuracy might improve if you increase the velocity by adding 1 grain powder.

Good Lord, this is like re-inventing the wheel every day.

Start at 10 yards if you want to see how it shoots. You can see a lot better at 10 yards than you can at a hundred. Then move back until you can't hit anything. Don't shoot anything further than that.

How do you know if any load regulates shooting at a hundred yards, if you don't have eyes like an eagle? Shooting at a hundred yards can drive you crazy alright.

I don't believe any of these supposed one inch groups at a hundred yards with open sights. I don't care what they say!

May I add:

Stay with the 286 grain bullets/load the rifle was originally regulated with and you will most probably find that the rifle shoots well if not even better with the scope than the iron sights.

It was written long before my time. In case you run across a wheel in Arkansas someday, don't think it's the first.
