Dragging firing pins?

My old British double hard to open wen sear released after dry firing or live firing. Suspect dragging firing pins? Only explanation I can come up with. Wilkinson 470 nitro

Sounds it. You would want to check pin protrusion and cocking dog timing as sources of your problem.

Cal says a drop of oil may loosen the pins I'll try that

Cal forgot to add that a blast from an air nozzle may loosen any junk in the pins. Do that first and then add a bit of oil.

PS. I keep a small compressor in my reloading room for just that(and other) reasons.

Nobody has mentioned it but I would never dry fire a double, rifle or shotgun, its a sure way to pound and eventually break pins. Possibly you are using snap caps which is the correct way to unload the hammer springs or test out the trigger mechanism if required.

Yep fired cases now snap caps. Reading I see dragging pins is common on square pin tips. Can be modified. How interesting this game is! Apparently old guns and modern primers have issues.....

If the rifle has bushed firing pins with removable bushes the pins will come out with the spring. Once out they can be examined for damage or a broken spring. Usually if a rifle has square firing pins the firing pin will turn with the bushing so the pins and springs can be examined and the pin tunnels can be cleaned for deposits of old grease and other gunk.

If the rifle has been dry fired without snap- caps the pin may be bent, and that may require a new pin be made!

If they are dragging then a fired case should shot signs of that..I just had one repaired that was dragging an had worn springs also, worn springs caused the problem.
