Pieper Cape Gun
Question for you experts. A rifle is listed as a Pieper Cape Gun 9.3mm with extra set of 12 guage barrels. The picture shows double exposed hammers. Would an educated guess be 9.3x72R? Isn't that the small 9.3 used in most drillings?

Probably.. BUT there are several other possiles also. Only a chamber cast will tell for sure.

Paul, the "cape guns" I am aware of are SxS (rifle/shotgun). More than two barrels, drieling(3), veirling(4)....

Pieper, is a Belgian maker, btw..

Sorry it is a sxs. Double rifle with extra 12guage barrels. Looks like a double rifle not a rifle/shotgun. Only reference is 9.3. So I was ASSUMING that due to the age and the fact that it had shotgun barrels it was more likely to be the lower powered 9.3x72R than a 74R.

I doubt that it's a74r. I don't think Pieper's have been made in seveal years.Wink
There are several 72R's that ir could be though. The 72's are similar powered to a 38-55.
I've got a Franz Sodia Cape Gune coming soon 16gaX9.3X something... Frowner

First off this is not a cape gun, it s a double rifle with a set of 12 ga barrels, big difference! A cape gun is a s/s rifle/shotgun combination gun. The are usually shotgun on the left, and rifle on the right!

The rifle is quite old, and is likely not a 9.3X74R, as the barrels look to be Damascus instead of fluid steel. That, and the hammers, along with unusually long barrels would indicate the rifle being older that the 9.3X74R cartridge. This rifle may be black powder as well, and probably is. That would also negate the rifle being a 9.3X74R, which was never offered in black powder loadings. I would do a chamber cast in the rifle barrels, and the shot barrels as well, because the shotgun may be a short length and black powder!

Pieper, is a very old make, and IMO, the gun is a black powder rifle & shotgun, but if tight, and there is no major pitting on, or "IN" the barrels, the gun could be a real fun gun to own, and hunt with, as long as it is used within it's limits! I have a 20 ga/58 Berdan Carbine cape gun with Damascus barrels that is a lot of fun to hunt deer/birds with, so they are fun guns! thumb

Thanks for the info. I never knew the definition of a cape gun I was just going buy how they had it listed. I agree the barrels do look more Damascus. I didn't expect it to be a 9.3x74R. I knew of the 9.3x72R being a low pressure round. Since the only reference is to 9.3 what other low pressure was around then? As you can guess I'm way out of my league on this.

I have an old double hammer 12ga with 32"full/full that belonged to my grandfather than I take out at least once a year with some light loads just for fun. Thought this might fit in the same category.

No.
This will be a combo with one cape gun barrel (leftshotgun/right rifle) and one SXS shotgun barrel. """

Well I think fuhrman might have cleared it all up. My buddy called me saying this combo was in a group of shotguns he was buying. He has not seen them in person. He called it a double rifle and I took his word for it. The discription calls it a Cape Gun.

Looking closer at the picture blown up it does appear it is a rifle barrel on the right side with a shotgun on the left. Making it a Cape with extra shotgun barrels. If he makes the purchase I'll find out for sure.

I have just seen that they have written a book about Pieper. Might be of interest if he buys the gun.
