Perfect weight for .450-470 class double rifle?

I have decided to go for 26 inch barrels on my next double (Bradshaw). But what weight should I aim for? It is a .450NE and I would think 10 pounds should be sufficient?

cal pappas

10-10 1/4 is about right.
More and heavy to carry but less recoil.
Less and easy to carry but kicks more.
Above 10 is for .500 and up.

My new 450 NE Verney Carron ( 24 inch barrels ) weights 5,15 kg which is 11,35 pounds. Does not feel heavy at all and balances perfectly on top of my shoulder. One close hunting friend of mine was surprised about the same. Ok - I have not tested it in the field walking 3-4 hours with it, but based on other rifles I have in same weight category I think this will not be any problem.

I think about 10-10.5lbs is right.

My elephant rifle, a Thys in 458wm with ~26 3/8" barrels - so in the same class roughly, shooting 500gr solids at 2135fps - weighs 10.5lbs. I wouldn't want much heavier and I wouldn't want much lighter.

My .475 NE weighs in at 10,56 pounds (4,8 kg)..

It is pretty ok to shoot recoilwise and not to bad to carry..

Thorns in fingers and hands, cuts in arms and legs, blisters in feets, happiness in me.

My Heym 450 3 1/4" with 25" barrels is about 10 1/4 . I think it just right for comfortable practice and carry. I have wanted to fool with a 500, but for me it would need to be 11- 11 1/2. I found myself think of just this after several miles of sand river tracks in mid day sun. The 450 seems perfect then.

My 500/465 weighed 10 1/2 pounds & my 450/400 weighs 10 pounds even.

Both are vintage English guns, don't notice any difference in carrying or

shooting them. Enjoy your double!
