Cal's Garbage

cal pappasCal's Garbage
Good day gents.
For your enjoyment are few more pieces of garbage from the "garbage collector." I have added one rifle from another here.
Cal
Joseph Lang .450 no2 from 1904. Bought by an officer who retired after the Boer War and became a hog farmer. It was then sold to a White Hunter in White Hunters Africa and remained in Africa until the 1950s when it went to England for repairs.
I'm not much of a shotgun man but this is my Grandfather's WC Scott 12-bore. Made in 1873 it was my granddad's wedding gift in 1918 from John Chandlar who owned Durgin and Park restaurant in Boston.
My only other shotgun is this Watson 12-bore. However, today I just purchased a Jeffery 12-bore waterfowl gun on AR's classifieds. Now to a few more double rifles.
This is my Walter Locke 8-bore, diameter of .875"
John Wilkes .600 nitro express from April of 1914. My favorite double was once the "tool" of Bill Pridham, an elephant hunter in the post WWII years.
My big bore--Robert Hughes 4-bore. Weight 22 pounds (23 when loaded!) 28-inch barrels.
Of course, you have all seen my .500 Watson. The original garbage piece!
My .450-400 3-inch Harrison and Hussey box lock ejector has taken more Alaska and Africa game than all my rifles combined, including Tanzania lion, leopard, croc, and hippo.
Last of all, this is Shootaway's double with special sights only for cow buffalo! Note the Westley single trigger.
Enjoy, my friends. See you at Dallas. I don't have a booth but will spend lots of my time at the Zimbabwe Professional Hunters and Guides Association.
Cheers, mates.
Cal

CHIPBCal: That is an unbelievable and beautiful collection. In my opinion, (be it humble), you are a gentleman of great refinement and taste. I am envious!!

Steve AhrenbergSorry Cal,
William Larkin Moore here in Phoenix told me he had an outlet for all the rejects and off face rifles. Those are junk ready for the scrapheap.
Garbage of the highest order.
That bottom one looks nice, nice display case as well.

cal pappasForgot to mention. My .450-400 ble was owned by Douglas Jardine (Google him). He was captain of the cricket team in England in the '30s and used an unethical tactic to beat Australia. They hated him and he replied all Australians were F---in' idiots. He hunted the Rhodesians in 1957 and came down with tick fever. He also had cancer which he died from in '58. His widow sold his rifle back to the company then. It made its way to Australia in 1963 via auction and Graeme Wright connected me with it in the mid-1990s.
Thanks for your kind comments.

Steve AhrenbergHi Cal,
That's a great story. Is there any way to find the provenance of my Charles Osborne 450-.400 3-1/4?
It was 1892 mfg. Would be really cool to find the route it took to my safe.

surestrikeAll shown are complete crap Cal! I think you need a rifle guidance councilor to help with your purchases in the future. I know of rifle and marksmanship expert from Canada who often posts on this sight. You might want to look him up. He is an expert cow shooter and can cover an entire target with holes in one setting.

Steve:
I don't know where the Osborne records are but a call to one of the current English makers should reveal there whereabouts. Then, write for a copy of the ledger page and that may list the original owner. Once you have a name you are set to go. If in the military, the Scottish Military Museum has records and bios of every man in the service. The Mormon church has genealogical records you can search through. That said, many companies today will not give out the name of the original owner as many descendants have complained about contacts from current owners. It's a crap shoot but well worth it if lucky.
Cheers,
Cal

cal pappasPondoro:
Many years go I had the pleasure of meeting Pridham's partner and friend, John Blower, and he identified the rifle. Also a bit of detective work added to the provenance. Finding the history of my old rifles is a great part of the enjoyment of owning them!

Cal, does the green packing case conform to airline regs? Does it lock?

A really handsome collection of old iron there.

14 November 2013, 00:05
cal pappasScriptus:
Yes, it conforms to TSA standards and will lock but no use investing in a lock when traveling with such low class garbage as I hunt with.
Cheers, mate.
