Heym 89B
Well, I finally pulled both triggers and ordered one of these in .470 Nitro Express.

Chris Sells at Heym USA was and is great to deal with. Chris is an extremely knowledgeable guy.

These rifles are hand-made, and I am told I should get mine in a year, plus or minus.

The features on this rifle are well thought-out and exactly what I was looking for. The standard features, with my added features, are listed below:

- Anson & Deeley long bar boxlock with triple lock-up (Purdey double underbites with a Greener crossbolt).
- Automatic ejectors.
- Non-automatic safety, with perfectly (at least to me) shaped button on the tang.
- Coin finished receiver with Grade 3 coverage English scroll engraving and “HEYM” discreetly engraved on both sides and bottom of receiver.
- Rust blued, 26-inch Krupp steel, hammer forged shoe lump barrels with quarter rib and front sight ramp, with “HEYM .470 N.E.” engraved and gold inlaid on barrel top rib.
- Double bladed rear sight on rib with a stippled, fixed blade engraved “50” and having a gold center line, and with a stippled folding blade engraved “100”.
- Flattened, brass beaded front sight on ramp having an ivory beaded flip up night sight.
- Exhibition grade, made to order Turkish walnut stock (designed by Ralf Martini) having a red NECG Universal recoil pad.
- Checkered pistol grip and splinter fore end having Deeley release lever.
- Trigger guard extended to engraved steel grip cap.
- Gold-plated double triggers with articulated front trigger.
- Double intercepting sears.
- 2-inch group at 50 yards guaranteed or it doesn't leave the factory.

The best of the old and the new, it seems to me. To paraphrase the Heym website, both classic British design and modern German engineering, materials and manufacture.

What say the double rifle gurus? I seem to be happy. Big Grin

Congrats! Have had 6 different Heym Doubles. Still own 3. The newish "British" design was a very good update to a great rifle.

That sounds about like what I would order. I can’t wait to see it, just as all the others here.

The wait must be frustrating, but I’m sure it will be worth it.

I’ve had my 89B in .470 for over 4 years. It’s been fired over 400 times for load development and 3 trips to Africa and 1 to Australia without a single problem. Great rifle!

Another AR member asked me about this just the other day.

COVID and the ammo shortage have slowed down my delivery schedule. I’m supposed to get the rifle by August. That will be 21+ months from the date of my order as opposed to the one year originally projected.

But I am not complaining. The 89B is a hand-made rifle and the people who make it were subject to sickness, quarantines and lock downs just like the rest of us were.

It’s been just as hard or harder to get Hornady factory ammo in Germany as it has been here, and that’s what they regulate their rifles with.

So, I’m still waiting.

Beautiful. A Heym is the only double I would consider buying again.
Life sends us huge curveballs. We left Alaska 10 years ago and I finally sold off my doubles about 18 months ago.
Now we are moving back to Alaska and I’ll be doubleless, lol.
The wood on your rifle is absolutely stunning.

My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

Thanks, gents. Although, of course, all credit goes to Heym.

I did choose the stock blank. Big Grin

Here's what the other side looked like.

A great piece of walnut, no doubt. I liked all of the other blanks on offer, but not quite as much.

Already I was beginning to fall into the African way of thinking: That if
you properly respect what you are after, and shoot it cleanly and on
the animal's terrain, if you imprison in your mind all the wonder of the
day from sky to smell to breeze to flowers—then you have not merely
killed an animal. You have lent immortality to a beast you have killed
because you loved him and wanted him forever so that you could always
recapture the day - Robert Ruark

That’s right.

Given the duration and effects of COVID, my timing in ordering a hand-built custom rifle from overseas - and a made-to-fit double rifle no less - could have been better.

But I wasn’t alone - and I’m not about to complain.

Many people and businesses were absolutely devastated by the pandemic and the lockdowns, quarantines, supply chain disruptions, business closures, illnesses and deaths it caused.

There’s nothing anyone can do about it except be grateful it wasn’t worse.

And in any case, I’m very happy that the wait will soon be over.

I have had the rifle for a few days now.

It fits me perfectly and is a joy to hold and behold.

I have not yet had a chance to fire it.

This is a photo of the factory test target that was furnished with the rifle.

As shown, the shooter fired a two-shot group with the iron sights at 50 meters using Hornady factory ammunition.

Per the usual practice, one round was fired from each of the right and left barrels.

The second shot was fired within 7 seconds of the first.

The group measures 0.525 inch from center to center.

I think I will keep this one.

Hi, Mike.

I was going to email you after I got back to see how you liked the final product, but it sounds like you are pleased. Thank you again for your patience through all of the unforeseeable delays.

The good news is that things are finally coming right on the production side, and we're getting caught up with regular ammo shipments, etc... New orders are in the 18-24 month range, but that's manageable.

Thanks again for bearing with us!

Chris, I could not be more impressed and happy with this rifle.

It is well worth every minute of the wait!

The fit and balance are right on. At eleven pounds, it feels nimble and alive and points naturally and without effort.

I wish I could thank and shake hands personally with everyone who worked on it.

I will take it to the range soon, and God willing, I will take it afield next year after Cape buffalo.
