SteveGoing rate for "The Hammerless Double Rifle"?
Found a copy of "The Hammerless Double Rifle" by Alexander Grey [ISBN 1-679356-28-7] at a local book store. They want quite a bit for it. It's in good shape, no dust jacket.
Whats the going rate for this book.

Steve, that book didn't come with a dust cover! I bought my copy new years ago, and it is a good book! Most are running around $750-$800 usd today, depending on condition.
The one thing some seem not to know is, there was a missprint on page on page #144 of the book, and there is a correction page that comes with the book, that is loose! If you buy the book, and it doesn't have the correction page, I can scann mine, and send it to you! If this page is missing, maybe you can get a price cut!

SteveThanks Mac. That might be some leverage.
I'm going to think about it a bit. The copy I'm looking at is 700.00. In any case that seems to be a lot for a book that was published in '94. I have to see if I want to jump that hurdle.

Martin GodioHi,
Beg your pardon for asking..... why is the price of this book so high?
I have a copy and if I remember well I bought it 10 years ago at a more reasonable price.
Thanks

It wasn't worth publishers retail when it was new. Certainly not an authoratative work.

tomo577al gray, the author put his best effort into the book the hammerless double rifle.
just like the book "building double rifles on shotgun actions" it was a first.
neither is without fault, but at least they took the time and made the effort to get it into print.
that really is more than most will ever do except critcise some omission , or error or nit pick.
usually a "first" draws out additional knowledge and information that can be used in a subsequent edition
- ie Graeme Wrights "shooting the british double rifle "
it is doubtfull the hammerless double rifle will ever be reprinted. the quality ( by wolfe publishing) was poor at best. and it took them years and years to sell off the first printing.
do i think it is worth $700 - $800 ? NO !
but if you want to buy one that seems to be the going rate.

Jim ManionThe one I found a while back that is a very good book on doubles (both rifles and shotguns) is "Amateur Gunsmithing" by Mills and Barnes. It actually takes you step by step on assembly and disassembly and troubleshooting.
Unfortunately, those books have taken off as well. Two listed on Abebooks for $495 and $500. One bargain on EBay for $475.

SteveGeez, you'd think that with the recent glut of all these books on the market, prices would start falling.

Idaho SharpshooterThe initial run was one-thousand books, IIRC. I bought mine at the 1995(?) SHOT Show in Dallas, and paid for it with a book review for a magazine. It is inscribed by the author. I doubt there is any other book that has the information that this one does...

Idaho Sharpshootermake sure any copy you want to buy has the loose leaf sheet "Addendum". It talks about cordite cleaning. I don't know if I'd sell mine, I read it from time to time...and I'd just spend the money on something.
