JudgeGGot to love a Merkel 141(e)
Two years ago I took my Merkel 141 (e) in 9.3x74 to Tanzania for a buffalo hunt (actually as a backup and for plains game). The gun was regulated with Norma 232 grain Vulcan ammo originally. I used the regulation feature to get it shooting Barnes X's reloads jam up and jelly tight. I was (unusually for me) smart and wrote down the progress on the regulation.
On the safari, while stalking something else, found a dagga boy skirting a herd and killed the 41" buff, and later, a zebra at 200 yards, a kongoni or two... a real treat for a rifle and scope that doesn't weigh 8lbs loaded with 4 rounds in a sleeve on the stock and two in the barrels.
Today, I scrounged around and found my regulation notes and then "unscrewed" the turns I'd put in for the Barnes bullets. I fired a couple of Norma's with my fingers crossed. Right barrel was 1.2" high at 100 yards and the left hit the little x in the bullseye. Shots three and four touched the prior ones respectively. You just got to love those targets that kind of splash color when hit.
I had a Leupold 1.75-6x scope on the tiny double with Merkel QD mounts that obviously returned to zero... I wish my eyes were good enough for iron sights, but at 62, I'm just glad I can wake up. What a great rig.
I then proceeded to kill a little 70lb hog to barbeque for Easter... dead right there with the first shot at fifty yards so no left and right, but dang, it's fun to have a rifle that has repeatable regulation and a scope mount that you can remove and replace at will.
I wish someone could figure out how to do it with bigger calibers????
