Dave BushTrade Hunt for Double
Guys, I recently got the following e-mail from a PH in Africa, Charl van Rooyen, who wanted to trade a hunt for my 500/.416 K-gun. I told him that for health reasons, I wasn't able to make the deal. He said if someone buys the gun, he would make them the same deal:
Dave,
Have you sold the rifle yet?
I was thinking to offer you something that might work for both of us? I really need a double, and you are offering it at a great price.
Trade you a Buff and non trophy Hippo hunt in my area in Mozambique for the double (Worth about $15k)
All you need to do is buy the tag ($1,250.00) , the airfare and hotel cost before and after the hunt, I will take care of the rest.
I will let you know about the legalities of leaving the rifle legally in S.A. with me.
You sound as if you will not have much use of for it, and I really need one, but cannot afford it, even straight of the bat from Krieghoff. I promise a good home for your gun.
Let me know if you are interested please.
Regards,
Charl van Rooyen

pagosawingnutThat's what I was gonna post but you beat me to it. Wonder how long it would take Charl to get his paperwork in order....

LabmanNever done anything like this, but I'm pretty sure you need to get some paperwork done on the US side to legally export a firearm.

zimbabweDon't know what the law is today but used to be lots of hoops to jump thru if you do not have an export license. You have to actually deal with both the State Department and the Defense Department. You WERE allowed ONE lifetime export without a permit. The reason I know it well is I went thru it to send a couple of PH's in Zimbabwe rifles. I also had to get permission from the country recieving the rifle which I got from the Zimbabwean Ambassador in the US at the time. As I say this has been several years ago and may have well changed by now and it may have been different for different countries. If I remember correctly (and I often do not anymore) ATF was not actually involved. I actually got pointed in proper direction by the SCI representative in Washington and they actually helped me thru all the steps. Finally one PH got his rifle and the other had his held by Zimbabwe customs over his Zimbabwean permit (Mugabe and put a hold on all new permits) and the rifle was finally sold by customs without the PH being notified. Zimbabwe never notified me it was being held. Hope this helps a little. Incidentally I just sent the rifles via registered mail which was fine at the time.

Dave BushI can't do the hunt but if any of you guys wants to buy the rifle and work something out with Charl, be my guest. The worst thing that could happen is you would get a great deal on a K-gun.

cal pappasIt's a good deal if it works.
A gent here in Alaska traded land for his dream hunt in Africa, turned over the deed, and shot 2-3 impala and a small wildebeest. No game in the area and no doubt he was taken. My advise would be to stipulate in the contract the details if the game is not seen or not taken due to whatever circumstances.
Cheers,
Cal

DoubleDonSounds like a good way to get rid of a K gun (if legal). Good luck.
