AntlersTravel with DRs
When traveling with expensive Bolt Rifles, I've purchased additional insurance at the airline ticket counter to cover loss or damage, I've never had to file a claim, but have often wondered what I was paying for. For those that travel with their very expensive DRs, how do you handle this?

My valuble guns and rifles, those over the limit allowed by my homeowner's policy are seperately listed and insured for replacement value, 24/7/365.
Also I use an expiditing firm for transfers in South Africa. When they haven't been able to show me a photo of my gun case in storage, they have interviewed the person in charge of securing the guns and provided details.

How does this expediting transfer work? Do you send your rifles ahead?

Antlers,
No, there are a couple of services in Johanesburg that will meet you and walk you through to where you ned to go if you are traveling on to, say, Zimbabwe, or ?...
They will then get from you the description and luggage tag numbers of your case and duffel and go to find them and insure that they are where they are supposed to be to get loaded on your later connection.
They used to be able to get photos of the gun case, but now only the duffle and to double check that your rifle case is locked up where it is supposed to be.
Some claim that with the new system of locking up gun cases in transit that the expititing services are no longer relavent, but I disagree since 1) your ammo is in your duffle and 2) they have been able to describe to me features of my gun case that I did not tell them as proof that they spoke with the people who actually handled it. Either way, cheap insurance that you hunt DG with your guns.
Optima is one service and I think Air 2000 also. IIRC, about $80 round trip, but might have a bit more.

577neOn a recent trip, we used Meet and Greet, arranged through Afton House. One gun was
"lost" in London, and M&G stayed with it,
calling several times each day until the
rifle showed up 3 days late. I use the
insurance company endorsed by the SCI for
doubles. That company is much less than
itemizing guns on my home owners ins. co.

dirklawyerI also use the SCI endorsed insurance company (somewhere in Florida). To date they are the least expensive of any other company that I've been given a quote. Roughly 20,000 coverage will run around 200 dollars a year. There are three or four special gun handling companies in Jo-Burg and for around 60 USD each way they do a fine job.

Funny, I checked prices for insurance a couple of years ago and far and away the best price was with my home owner's policy. Maybe I missed the SCI endorsed company. What is the name? I think I may need to reprice. But I'm not sure I'm paying more than ~ $200/$20k.
Thanks,
JPK

BTW, that is a GREAT reason to use an expiditing service.
