Have you had a solid exit a buffalo shot lengthwise from the rear or front with a double? Caliber, bullet, weight? I tried with a .577 from the front but it did not exit.

.475 No2 from spine through chest and out and from one shoulder through the other and out but not lengthwise.

Never. Have shot loads of them front-on with solids from .375H&H, .416 Rigby and .500NE.

Heres one from a few weeks back, at 15m centre of chest front on exit rear Rh leg 286 gr hydro 9.3x74. Travelled 20m and down. Pretty impressive. First use of hydros in the 9.3. Shot 5, 3 dropped on the spot the other two travelled 15m and 40m. All good bulls.
All but one shot exited. Junction of neck chest stayed in front on at 18m.
Solids out of my 577 2 3/4 stay under the skin on the off side. Cheers Mick

Not a solid, but I did shoot a Texas heart shot on a buff in Tz in 2014 with a 500 NE Hornady DGX. We found the bullet in the lungs when we dressed it out.

I shot a cape buffalo from about 75 yds with a 300 gr Nosler partition from a 375H&H with a hit in the crease between his right shoulder and neck. The bullet hit the front part of the left lung, ripped the arteries of the top of the heart, went through the back part of the left lung and pierced part of the full stomach and was found just under the skin against the left back ham.

Most I’ve shot with even solids have stopped under the skin on the off side unless shot through the lungs and not hitting any bone heavier than a rib. However all were stoppers within thirty or forty yards on Cape buffalo. I’ve never had one shoot all the way through length wise, regardless of bullet type or caliber even at very close range.

Interesting that in the larger calibers the bullets do not appear to exit often but with .375 and 9.3 they may exit lengthwise. Yet in Michael s and Sam s tests the penetration was 68" for the .577 and up to 76" with a higher velocity 600 OK. This would be in keeping with comments about the .577 having better penetration and SD. I don't think they tested .375 or 9.3 as I recall. Clearly sectional density is important but the media tests don't give the full story. Maybe velocity is a bit more important for penetration of tissue vs media?

The second barrel from my .500 went in just below and between the eyes of this bull as it faced me, at a slight angle.
The entry can be just seen in the pic on the forehead just a tad lower than the eye-line.

The exit can also be seen on the left flank after the projectile exited after smashing the hip bone, blowing splinters of bone out the exit.

The shot was taken off sticks at about 130yds, after a poorly placed first.
Projectile was a C.E.B Safari Raptor 475gn at about 2400fps.

Yes, but from a bolt gun, 458Win mag 500gr solid on back up shot in the rear ham & exited from the face/nose, I was impressed !

Problem for me would be this freakin' stomach full of wet grass. Maybe if your Buff were on a diet.
