Buzz Charlton450 3 1/4 Alex Henry
Hi Folks
I have an Alex Henry .450 3 1/4 for sale. It is 104 years old and still in good condition. Its here in Zim and as far as I know, getting it to the States, while time consuming, is possible. Drop me a line if you are interested.
While on the topic of doubles I am interested in buying a good second hand 500 Krikoff. Cheers buzz

ozhunterIt surprises me that you would be happy to use a Krieghoff type safety?

WillThe old Rigby just not enough gun, eh?

Bill CBuzz - handling that old .450 was like touching history. Ian Nychens double, correct? If you can get Charmain or Kirsty to take a few picts and send them to me, I'll be happy to post them.
A .500 K-gun, I would have thought that MikeJ would have left you his as a tip!

We talked about something along those lines actually (although not as a tip!) before I shot the Nyamuswa bull, the charging cow and the big dugga boy with the Krieghoff. At that point, I think my sentimental attachment to the rifle became so strong I could not bear to leave it behind.
I think the cocking lever issue on the Krieghoff is a red herring. It works fine and is far safer than carrying a double cocked with the safety on. All I can say is that it worked for me on an ele charge at five paces, which suggests that with practice anyone should be able to use it.

The concern would be particularly in relation with a PH using it for the likes of charges within five meters and follow ups on game like Leopard.

WillIf you are following up a wounded leopard, or anything else for that matter, and have the safety on you deserve to get chewed.

I hear you Mike, before then it was just metal and wood (abeit nicely crafted!). I'm looking fwd to your report on the hunt, sounds exciting.

The are several PH who are friends or acquaintences of Buzz's that have successfully used Krieghoff's for years on eles.
Rich Tabor, who is doing some hunts for Buzz uses one, a 470. The safety really is no issue for those who have become accustomed to them.

ozhunterUnless they are far easier to activate than Blaser's version, then I would still think it could be an issue for a PH. But hey, that's my thinking

.
JPK, Richards Kreighoff came from my New Zealand gun dealer. Small world..
14 December 2009, 16:24
JPKYes, small world.
Here is some evidence that the cocking system is no issue, at least for those accustomed to it: In May 2008 I was hunting with Richard in Nyakasanga, it was very thick, the rains had been long, late and heavy. Richard had split the tip of his right thumb, don't recall how. It was bandaged up and he said in passing that he wondered if it would be an issue with the cocking slide. Not long into the hunt we were "entertained" by one of the areas cantankerous cows when she gave us a rush at close range in the thick stuff. She stopped and protested and we backed out and went around. Richard's bandage was showing some fresh blood, but he noted that he hadn't noticed any issue cocking the rifle.
I have shot Richard's Kreighoff a number of times, and, while the slide isn't what I'd prefer, it isn't too dificult to use and I'm sure that with practice it would become second nature.

mauser93Oh, my. Just saw the photos. Really excellent gun porn.
How/where is/was your Alex Henry proofed, if you know?
Thank you for posting.

John FrederickIf that rifle once belonged to Ian Nychens (as Bill C has suggested) then it a seriously valuable piece of African history.
Ian's like are long gone.
