Looking for Purdey # 15884

HarryLooking for Purdey # 15884
I became proud owner of a Purdey snap action, underlever sidelock
in 303 British. It is marked #1 and the serial number is 15,883.
I would love to find the #2 and see if it is for sale and if so could I afford it?
It would be a real find to be able to put this pair made 1897 together again.
I am not sure where in heck to start the search. Help!!

TransvaalLook up "matchedpairs.com" on the web and as them if they have your other rifle in their orphan list.

HarryThank you. I emailed them and the reply was that there was little hope as they basically were set up to find shotguns. I noted they went ahead and put in the serial number to the list.
Thanks for your reply.

enfieldsparesTry a search using the back catalogue search of Bonhams, Holts, Sothebys, Christes and you might get a hit.
You'll maybe have to search for Purdey Rifle or maybe even Purder 15884 or some such. But you might be lucky.
What say Purdey? They have their records and at least may tell you if 15884 was a rifle...as kit may not be!

Harry470 Evans...I don't know where you are but if you were here now I would buy you a RC Cola and a Moon Pie for sure!

I would have bet all my monopoly money plus Park Place that the information on the #2 rifle would never come to light with exception what Purdey might tell me from their records. I have e mailed them twice already.
I am more excited about this than a kid getting to open presents before Santa hits the rooftop.
I thank you for your efforts and if you are at Dallas for the convention a toddy or three are on me for sure. Please stop by the Tuffpak booth 4533 and introduce yourself.
Now I need to see if I can find current owner and what the odds might be about me getting #2 and all the goodies.
I might have to hock one of the kids in order to do so if possible.

Mims

enfieldsparesThat's good research. In truth I hadn't thought of suggesting Gavin Gardiner as I'd though the likelihood of it having been sold in the last decade unlikely.
From the time it was made I'd guess that both "2" and "3" would be regulated for 215 grain bullets which were the "standard" at that time...the 174 grain not coming until until about 1907.

Damn Harry, that was a real find in short order! I too was fearful that you would be able to find that twin sister!
You must have been born under a magic star!
....................................................................Good luck on getting the rest of your find!
