quartermainjus wondering
Anyone in the Washington, Pa/ Wheeling W.Va area? Seems I remember reading a post about someone visiting the Wheeling Cabelas back when they knew what a double rifle was. Haven't seen one there in quite awhile. Maybe anyone with a warm shooting shack and a bunch of different powders who might be willing to help this idiot find a good lead bullet load for his paltry 45-70?

cal pappasQ:
IMR 4198 and lead bullets are fine. PM me as I have all the double rifle you may need. Remember you are looking for regulation velocity, not maximum velocity.
Ca.

dpcdYour rifle regulates perfectly with 49 grains of 4198 and a 300 grain jacketed bullet, if I read your other post correctly. No one can give you a lead bullet load that will immediately regulate in your rifle; you will have to experiment a lot to make that happen. I noted that with your current 300 grain lead bullets over 49 grains of 4198, it shoots 6 inches apart; I hope I understand that right. A chronograph might tell you what velocity you are getting with the jacketed ones and the velocity you might want to duplicate, as long as the lead bullets can take it; which at 2100 fps or so, is iffy.

dpcdI have a Handloader article that lists 55 grains of H4198 and a 300 grain jacketed bullet that is less than 28000 psi. Based on this, you can go a bit higher with your loads.

quartermainWhat I meant on my above post was I was jokingly looking for somebody local who might have their own private range and an enclosed shooting shack. Getting chilly out here in my neck of the woods. I will be heading to my range in a few hours to try a few loads. Will letcha know. Cal, appreciate the offer but you are a bit of a drive from PA.
