Is This Lancaster A "Screw Grip" Action?
This pic seems to show a "screw grip" design, correct?

If it is, what specific type is it, Webley A & W C?

It's a Lancaster 'C' Grade rifle.

Hi Jack !
I'm thinking thats a common "top lever" double.
I think screw grip is when the trigger gaurd swings out and is screwed around in a circle direction to open & close the action.
Hope this is right !
Take Care,

The "screw grip action" is as far as I understand a Webley design. It works with a threaded top lever spindle wich lowers the toplever locking surface to the dolls head when the toplever is turned back. You can see the threaded toplever spindle if you look to it from the front. And yes, your rifle seems to have this feature.

Chris O,

I think you are describing one of several screw grip designs,

the Jones Underlever. I think the pic that I put up is another

screw grip example, I know not whose concept it is.

Martin,

I agree with you, I hope others endorse what you and I believe.

You referred to this rifle as if I were the owner, I am still

hunting for a double at this point.

I think you need 500nitro from www.nitroexpress.com to get a definite answer.

YES BFJ, the picture above seems to be an example of the SCREW GRIP THIRD FASTENER! You notice the cut in the end of the doll's head is cut at an angle, so an extention on the front side of the top lever, fits into that slott, and forces it down into it's socket, as the lever is pushed back to center on closeing.

What Chris O is describing is a screw grip onder lever action, generally called a JONES UNDERLEVER, though according to 400NitroExpress, many other companies also made screw grip underlevers as well.

I had one of these years ago, built for Watson Brothers. Yeah, it's a screw-grip, but it isn't Webley's. Keep in mind that the patent expired in 1896. Whoever the trade maker was built these for a number of different makers, like Webley did. Haven't figured out who it is yet.

Thanks MacD,

Always good to read your input.

Thanks Mark,

I've seen an Osborne on Champlins like this and tomo577

has a Rodda in 450/400 3 1/4" with this action as well-
