Verney Carron .577 Range Report

MJinesVerney Carron .577 Range Report
I thought I would post a report on my trip to the range this morning with the .577 Verney Carron. I only had ten Kynoch rounds to shoot, all soft points. I found the recoil to be brisk but manageable. I was shooting off of sticks so that I could roll with the rifle. Trigger pull was crisp, not too heavy and not too light. There is no mistaking when the gun goes off, but it is not a untameable beast either. I had a friend at the range too who accounted for two of the ten rounds. I was a bit surprised at the velocities on the Kynoch ammo. I was expected something closer to 2000 fps with 24" barrels. All in all very pleased with the rifle and its performance.

Todd WilliamsNice shooting Mike. How does the recoil compare to the 500?

After seeing Mike shoot it may be offhand at 100 yards.
Great looking group from a fine rifle.
I see a 577 in my future and the VC look pretty good.

MJinesGroup was shot at 50 yards off of sticks. Recoil was noticeably more stout than a .500 but not uncomfortable. Only injury was by buddy who cut his finger on the trigger guard with the recoil. If I can get comfortable carrying it, all 13+ pounds of it, I would like to use it on an elephant next year. I am looking forward to loading up some rounds with RL15 and see how that impacts the felt recoil.

HizzieNot suprised by the velocity. It has been 100+ for how many weeks now? Excellent shooting sir.

sroseThat seems fast for Kynoch ammo. I was only getting around 1950 in my gun. Is that ammo old cordite or new ammo from Kynamco?
Good shooting by the way!

I'm sure you will be just fine carrying around those extra two pounds and as Sam says, take out the recoil reducer to drop the weight another pound (at least).

Ya gotta tell me about this Reloder 15 thing ...
Calculations on a 13 pound 577 launching a 750grain bullet at ~ 1,950fps shows a small ft-lb difference between using RL-15 (65/95) vs. Accurate 4350 (66/100 - same for W760) vs. RL-22 (67/107). The first is recoil and the second is recoil with gas after-effect.
I've used RL-15 with foam filler in smaller caliber doubles like the 450/400 and I can feel the difference compared to larger volumes of slower powder. I haven't tried RL-15 in the 600NE (or 600OK or 585AHR) and am interested if the small % ft-lb differences translate into felt differences in these "giant-bores".
Congratulations on the new Verney-Carron 577 and may many elephant kneel before its might and your aim

MJinesIt is new ammo ordered from MW Reynolds. I know the temps have been hot, but we were at the range between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Temps were probably in the mid-80's. I do not have my log sheet with me, but my recollection is that some of the rounds had velocities in the 2060 fps range, however, others were as high as 2160+ fps.

Nah,
Just buy a Daschund and hold a piece of cheese near the muzzle. A few "walk-throughs" and you'll be good to go again.
