MJines cans say what he wants...I'm ready!!!

I head to Zim the end of May 2015 for a couple of tuskless.

Mike gives me hell about my old Merkel .500 NE...but I like her. 45 yds off sticks. 570 gr CEB FPS, 96 gr R-15, Kynoch foam wad, Fed 215, Jameson brass.

Maybe 4-5 years post obama...if any ele left...we'll find out. Big Grin

This is the old shoe-lump Merkel. It is a great rifle. Jorge is waiting for it to double but so far shot a few 100 with none. It fits me like a glove.

I have a feeling everybody that doubled a Merkel...strummed the rear trigger.

And yes...shoot front (right) to back (left)...just like I have shot my double barrel shotguns since I was about 14.

Not a thing wrong with Merkel doubles. Nice shooting, too. I'd say you have her dialed in.

I am going to have to drop by one of these days and see how you shoot it for myself. Then we can hit that bar-b-que place you talked about--

Lane,

You are just about there. Try adding a couple of grains of powder and see if those groups don't fall right on top of each other.

My rifle with this lot of R-15. Does not like any more powder. When I went to 97 gr...the primers got really flat and some of them extruded the crater margins into the firing pin hole. And...the groups were exactly the same. I then tried 96.5 gr and it did nothing either. I was afraid to go to 98.

I would have thought a little more velocity would have brought your rights and lefts together a bit more, but if your rifle doesn't like more powder, I concur that you are ready to go as is.

If you head to the range to practice some more, you may want to put a target up at ~22yds just to see what your rifle does, as a confidence builder. Spread should be half, and more likely than not you will be shooting inside of 22yds. (22yds being about half of the range you shot your group shown in the op.)

Good luck!

Yes...John, I agree with you and Sam. That was the reason I tried to go on up. It just seems with this lot of R-15 and brass...that 96 gr is the most she safely wants.
