questions about my Merkel 140
I pulled my butt plate off. I see there is a lead plug installed, and a steel plate screwed into a cut out. What is the plate for?
Can I remove the plate and install a recoil reducer? I add a 11/2" pad to the rifle, it feels a little heavy in the front.

I need some cast bullet data. I found some 350 gr gascheck hard cast.

Do You fire form new case, before loading for a hunt?

How hard is it to get the front sight out, what is involved?

Thanks
JD

My 470 had the same plate arrangement and had a steel rod in the thru bolt hole. The plate was to hold the counterweight in place I suppose. After installing a Decellerator and reinstalling the counterweight and the retaining clip I proceeded to shoot the gun. After about 20 rounds I noticed that there was a bump on the recoil pad. I removed the pad and discovered the counterweight had sheared the screw holding the clip in place and was pushing back into the recoil pad upon recoil. I merely removed the counterweight and shoot with out it. If you were to put a mercury reducer in the stock I would reccommend precautions be taken to assure it will not move upon recoil. The Decellerator is a hollow pad and offers no resistance to movement of the counterweight. Just my experience of course.

I have a Merkel 470, it feel fine to me. I added an 1" Kick ez pad for 15 1/2 " LOP.

I am shooting 30 Gr. AA5744, no filler and a 540 Gr. FNPB Custom Cast Lead Bullet with a Muzzle Velocity of 1100 FPS.

Custom Cast Bullets

It has the same POI at 25/50 yds as my hunting load of 108 Gr. H4831 and a 500 gr. Woodleigh Soft or Solid @ 2050 fps.

I use new Jamison Brass. I FL Resize, trim and prep brass.

I sent mine to JJ Perdeau at Champlin Arms to install a new front sight witha pop up night sight and to modify the rear sight to a V style.

Take all that crap out of the stock and install a good recoil reducer in it. Glass bed the recoil reducer in so it won't move. 470's can be fun if proper precautions are taken. I had the rear sight turned into a V notches and had a good bead front sight put on. It'll take some time for a good smith to do it as it is hand-filing the V notch for elevation and verifying it by shooting a bit.

I will have to remove my pad to fit it,and will weigh the insert and compare the weight of
a recoil reducer, I may just add some lead shot and 5 min expoy over the top of the steel retainer. Tradewinds I got the 11/2" pad that real pushes it out there, thanks for the load data. I just noticed that the brass insert in the front sight was real tarnished, it shines now after a little polishing. I will file my sights my self. If I screw up Its not a big deal I will fit a gost ring sight to it later.
any way.

Thanks

Bill,

What load are you using to get that velocity with the 420 gr LFNGC?

Bal

Was that your "firebreathing" load?

You were a regular one man show! The 577 double splitting the tree in half, the flamethrower and shooting Kelly's 600. And a lot of ham on the hoof to boot.

Can't wait to see what you have in store in June!
