Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

cal pappasGents:
I'm back from a successful turkey hunt in Kansas.
Here are a few more photos for you: a full length shot (almost), the breech open, some ammo that came with the rifle (note is for Jeffery rifles and therefore can't be used in this Scott), and a 30 yard target. Breakup is here and Lake Pappas is now my driveway and the snow is too mushy to walk on so 30 yards it is. I only had 7 bullets of the correct .483" diameter so I took three shots to play and get the feel of the trigger pulls and four in the target (over a standing rest).
Thanks, all, for your kind comments. It is indeed a beautiful rifle (even though Shootaway says it is junk) and will prove to be quite accurate. If any of you fine double rifle men want to join us for our first shoot you're welcome on May 31.
Cheers,
Cal

jorgeVery nice indeed Cal. So all that ammo can't be used in your rifle? I suppose you can trade or sell it for the correct stuff. I take it the difference is .483 v .488?

Jorge:
Yes, you are correct in the diameter of the bullets. I'm afraid I'm stuck with the ammo as it is difficult and expensive to ship ammo to/from Alaska. (A gent in the lower 48 wants to buy an original box of 25 4-bore shells and I can't ship them to him). In the interim, I'll get some Woodleigh bullets and have a bit of fun.
Cheers,
Cal

surestrikeCal Trade?
No extra charge for the custom hose clamp forend hook....
surestrike,
How much boot would you require of Cal if he wants to trade?
Selling point: That hose clamp is a good attachment point for string or sling, so Cal won't have to "African Carry" it on safari.

Larry, Double Gun Journal, Volume 25, Issue 1, Spring 2014, Reloading the Oddball Metrics & Others, Part X, J.C. Munnell. Some news stands carry DGJ or you could probably order a copy.
I read the DGJ article on the Victor Sarasquetta (Spanish gunmaker) .475 No.2 Nitro Express.
That double rifle is a 1955 vintage, acquired by author in 1983.
Weighs only 8 pounds and 13 ounces with 24" barrels.

One typo (surely) in a caption with picture of rifle says:
"... having fired many rounds out of the under eight-pound (sic) Sarasquetta,
I question why a lot of British 'elephant' guns were made as heavy as they were."

Good Reasons for Reloading:
"Fortunately the gun came with with some of the original Kynoch ammunition and a handful of fired cases.
The latter proved virtually useless, thanks to the corrosive effects of both the old Berdan-type primers and Cordite
and the fact that the cases had not been washed after firing.
I did manage to chronograph a few of these old rounds, and they gave 2165 fps--almost precisely as advertised.
Almost all of these cases split on the initial firing."
The article is excellent in describing author's travails with finding 90 more rounds of original Kynoch ammo at London's H&H premises,
with help of friends, getting it shipped to him,
and then the fun begins with pulling the old stab-crimped bullets (I suspect the Vise Grip method, not detailed),
throwing away the Cordite,
killing Berdan primers with several drops of "oil" in case left standing for several days ...
Wamadet brand hand tool, hydraulic depriming tool, was used for the Berdan primer removal, with water and the "smart rap of a hammer."
Then annealing the case necks before reloading.
He dipped the case necks in 3-In-1 oil, then held the case necks in molten lead for twelve seconds, then quenched in water,
washed in soapy water, rinsed thoroughly in water, then dried the clean cases in toaster oven at 150 degrees for 2 hours.
He claims 8 reloads with no case splits after that.

Or cherish the Kynoch ammo and get Bertram brass and Woodleigh bullets. RCBS and CH4D for dies and shellholder.
Author claims to have found happiness with 500-grain bullet and 106 grains of IMR-4895,
and half a packing peanut as filler, yielding 2217 fps:
"Two shots from each barrel produced groups of two inches at 50 yards ..."(Author does not clearly state how far apart those two-inch, two-shot "groups" from each barrel were.
If all 4 shots went into two inches, I would call that a group, not "groups."
A properly labeled paper target photo could have cleared this up!)
Must have been a .483-caliber/500-grain Barnes Original, made back in the 1980s,
though his rifle was apparently regulated for 480-grainers, best I can tell.
Apparently .483 was the more common caliber standard used by the likes of W&C Scott and Son, H&H and such,
while WR used .488 or .489 for their proprietary version.

Have you pulled the locks?
I have read that Gun Makers would Gold Plate or Gold Wash lock parts and ejector parts of guns that would be going to the colonies or to areas of high humidity where they may or may not see the care that were required of them.
19 April 2014, 15:25
ZephyrSorry for my lack of comprehension, I see the Hammers are gold plated.

cal pappasZephyr:
I have not pulled the locks but a former owner did. I don't even turn a screw on my old doubles. Yes, that is the reason many makers plated internal parts but it was not a common practice.
Cheers,
