Dutch44Cast bullet .55 NE practice load
Anyone have a reduced practice load for the .500 NE using cast bullets. I had a custom mould made for a 570 grain gas checked, heat treated, flat nosed projectile. Looking for something in the 1700 or 1800 fps range. Thanks,
Dutch

MJinesMike, I will check when I get home. I had a load that I used with my Merkel. It was with AR5744 as I recall. I have it all written down at home. The one thing I will say is that while the cast loads are fun to shot they are dirty, at least with 5744. You get a lot of unburned powder that can gum up the mechanism and then cleaning the barrel to scrub out the lead is a little chore. But they are fun to plink with.

Dutch44Thanks, Mike. Look forward to shooting them as well.

MJinesOne cleaning hint that worked for me. Buy one of those lead cleaning rags (they are yellow and impregnated with some type of cleaner). Cut the rag into small sections akin to a patch and use the cut section like a patch to clean the bore. Worked for me.

Definitely the best way to remove lead.
When I was using my S&W 629 with SSK 316g Linotype bullets for all of my hunting, this is the only method that worked consistently.

MJinesThe load I was using was 40 grains of Accurate 5744, Federal 215M primer and a 515 grain Moyer flat point cast bullet (no gas check). I was getting approximately 1300 fps. My notes indicate that it regulated great for the Merkel. Hope that helps.

NFMikeIt would help if you corrected your post title to accurately reflect the caliber you are referring to.
Do a search for "500 NE components" by ledvm. There is data for cast in the 500. Your bullet is a little heavier so adjust accordingly.
