Which scope and mount on your double?

DB BillWhich scope and mount on your double?
Be specific. What scope(s) do you have on your double rifle and how do you have it mounted. Be specific with brand names please.
Does it affect the balance very much and did you have any regulation "issues" when you added the scope?

giHeym 470 NE with german claw mounts 1.5 x 5 Leupold with 30 mm tube & ill ret.
Just sold the gun, but it really worked great.
If you give it a try, you will find out it is actually quicker the open sights. I know many will argue the point but try it.
Years ago, an Alaskan bear guide did extnesive testing with several rifles and surprised himself that low powered scope was quicker.

Andre MertensMy FN-Browning 9,3x74R carries a Swarovski 1,25-4x24 (circle dot reticle) in claw mounts. When scoped, the bbls. needed to be regulated but the results are worth it.
This rifle is used for drive hunting and shoots both bbls. in one hole at 50 m.

5 shots are a group.

JudgeGMy Searcy Classic .450/.400 3" has Talley QD rings and a Leuopold 2.5x compact with Precision Reticle post and crosshair.
My Merkel 141(e) 9.3x74R has a factory QD system and a 1" Leupold compact with standard crosshairs.
Regulation on both is fine with or without scope. Both are going with me to Tanzania in a week!

I prefer the rail mounted scopes in claw mounts. Swarovski's rail with their "dental" profile seems to be one of the better designs currently, but all are equally as strong I suspect.
I asked the question about scopes from the HEYM regulators last week, and as a rule of thumb, the addition of a scope typically moves the shots farther apart.
So if the rifle was regulated without a scope, the addition of a scope should move the shots apart.
If the rifle was regulated with the scope, the removal of the scope will move the shots closer together.
Again, this is not a 100% rule, but rather the general findings from practical experience.
Here is a Swarovski SR 1-4 in claw mounts.

zimbabweMy Merkel 141 in 8x57JRS has a Leupold 1.5x5 VariX III in an MAK pivot mount I installed in less than 15 minutes. No changes in handleing and accuracy is outstanding. Best 5 shot group,3R,2L measured .633. Very quick, loading is a little more awkward than before but no problem. I think you would get very fast with a little practice. All upside no down.

zimbabweWill,
There is a write up and some pics somewhere on here I did a couple of months back when igot the mount. Very pleased with them and the price is very reasonable. Their catalog has mounts for almost every concievable current manufacture gun ,bolt, single and double. Very helpful people and prompt in their service.

Black FlyDo any of you have a picture of the Valemt mount and base? I remember Hammer'm did some adjustments to the sight to stiffen it up, last spring. I'm in the process of putting a different quarter rib on my Browning (using a Ruger rib from a No. I). Initially, it will have a scope attached by ruger rings, but hope eventually put on some type of QD system, like a claw. But, that will have to wait for my piggy bank to gain some weight.

338x74Rnew_guy: Do you happen to know if Heym has any experience with mounting the new Swarovski Z6 1-6x24 EE in claw mounts? This scope has an eye relief of 4,7 inches, and I wonder if a correct mount would be to far forward on the gun to fit in the precut holes for the mounts.

REY375Hello All,
I have scoped my Beretta Silver 689 (9,3x74R)with a Swarovski PVI 2 1,25-4X24 ill reticle (cercle dot) and it works perfectly (mount is EAW)!

N E 450 No2I have 2 scopes in the pivot mount for my 9,3x74R Chapuis, a 2.5-8 Leupold with heavy duplex, and a 1.5-6x42 Swarovski with the illuminated circle dot reticle.
On my British 450/400 3 1/4" I have a S&B 1-4 with Flash Dot reticle in claw mounts.
Both doubles have been to Zimbabwe, the Chapuis 3 times, and have performed perfectly.
A scoped double is truely the best hunting rifle on the Planet.

Yes, that particular scope has been ordered on several rifles this year. There are no pre-cut holes on the rifle for the mounts. Each mount base is machined into the top rib for a particular application, i.e.: make and model of scope.

mstarlingI bought a used 9,3x74R Chapuis. It was fitted with a Schmidt & Bender 1.5-6x42 rail scope using Chapuis mounts.
Great scope. Superb set up. Wish I could afford to do others like it!
