Badger MattHornady DGS in my Merkel 470NE?
I ordered two boxes of ammo for the rifle I hope to pick up at my FFL tomorrow evening. Both boxes are DGS (solids). I was sure I'd ordered softs, but "nope" I got just what I asked for. Any concerns with putting two boxes of these through a new Merkel. It would seem to my somewhat simple mind the brass would accept the rifling leaving the steel around the lead untouched. hence no issues with the barrels and solder.
Oh Wise Professors of the Twin Spiral Tubes, what say thee?

MJinesYou will be fine. I shoot Hornady DGS in my .500 NE Heym. The Hornady DGS is a lead core solid akin to the Woodleigh.

dpcdYes they will be fine but the jackets are steel which is lightly plated with copper. So, the rifling in your barrel will engrave the steel; not just the coating. It is very soft steel though so no problems in modern rifles.

MikeBurkeAs an FYI, the Dangerous Game Expanding (DGX) is a steel jacketed bullet also.

ELeetonMy Sabatti has digested just shy of 300 rds of DGS without a hitch. If it can manage them I would expect that your Merkel could.
Have you tried contacting Merkel to learn their thoughts? Do you know what it was regulated with?

Fo Fiddy NEThe Hornaday DGS were the first thing I fed my new VC .450-400. No problems at all.

dpcdAll I shoot is Hornady DGS and DGX in a Krieghoff, a Sabatti, and a Searcy; you won't have any problems with them in any modern rifle. The jacket material is very soft.

Badger MattThank-you, gentlemen, for your help. One of the many things I enjoy about this forum.

shootawayThe DGS is the best solid ever.It is made by a great company too.

MacD37I don't think anything made by Hornady will damage a Merkel double rifle. However good soft points are better for the first shot on buffalo, followed by a solid for the going away shot that is the usual presentation with a buffalo.
Welcome to the DRSS!
