Champlins shows a deluxe Pedersoli Kodiak 45/70 double rifle for sale.

They usually shoot pretty good.

Tony, is it still priced as a Pedersoli or is it nearly = to a Chapuis?

Too close to a Chapuis for me unless you want a hammer gun.

That's a pretty one! I believe DGW is still handling them as well, either .45/70 or 9.3X74R......

Except that you can rechamber to 450 N° 2 very simply and then you are in another league, pricewise, for a Chapuis or any other double.

Add a new pad for sure and maybe re-regulation (which could be an issue with the way Pedersoli solders the barrels) and you still have a light-for-caliber hammer double for DG.

I have been told that the twist is wrong for the 450 NE rounds, and that the action is not right for a NE round that size, but empirical evidence seems to say that it does work and can work very well. Of course if your rifle blows up do not blame me!

Part of my problem is that I remember not that long ago when you could get one for ~$1500...

Now there's another option, but I know absolutely nothing about loads and performance for this caliber. Can you use smokeless powder safely at useful velocities?

You may have a hard time finding published load data that matches NE velocities. You could call Butch Searcy as he made at least one that was regulated for modern smokeless loads and higher velocities. There is also the .458 RCBS that MacD37 can tell you about (and I think as least one other member has one) that is similar.
