DR Fun Match Shooting Question.
Which is the way to go for the DR fun match gatherings? Full loads or reduced loads?

I have shot thousands of rounds of .38 special in PPC matches using wad cutters loaded with just barely enough powder to get the bullet to the target then in later years shot in IDPA matches that required full loads.

These DR shoots are just for fun and aren't regulated by an NRA rule book, if they were it would not be much fun.

So what is the accepted standard for DR fun shoots, target loads or hunting loads?

Muletrain, use any load you like, but certainly it would need to regulate properly in your rifle! You might try the 75 % rule for a light load in your double rifle. The way it works is what ever full load that regulates in your double rifle, it will usually also regulate with a bullet weighing only 75% of the weight of you full load bullet. A tiny bit of experimenting may be called for but not much usually! This 75% rule load will always hasve less recoil that your full load. More usefull when you want to shoot a lot of rounds in a big bore double rifle, like at the hoot&shoots!

For me, it's the perfect time to use my leftover ammo from a past safari.

If I'm going to load for the event, I prefer reduced loads. Easier on my shoulder and the guns.

Full house loads are great to take along for anyone who wants to try my guns to get a feel for the level of recoil.

Hope this helps.

Please educate me. Regarding the 75% rule, when one uses the lighter bullet, what change (if any) is made to the powder charge?

None. Same powder charge, lighter bullet. The 75% rules only applies to the bullet weight.

Muletrain,

Quit fret'n about the match, just show up and enjoy yourself. This is first and foremost, a social event. Greeting and meeting new friends and ogling rifles is what it is all about!
We'll be glad to see ya!
