Cali[commy]fornia & 50 Caliber Ban question
Did the Pelosi ban only name the 50 BMG or did it include the 500NE,

500 Jeffery, 577NE and so on? Did it include shot guns with larger

than .499 bore diameter as well? I am completely convinced that absent

a miracle New Jersey is going to be "strapped into the same wheelchair

and pushed down the same staircase"! Others too will follow... Mad Frowner

Technically, it was the 50 BMG. I don't have the exact ordinance in front of me, so it's still open whether any of the other hunting bigbores can or will be affected in the future.

The last time I hunted in Californa I decided to research the states gun law since I was hunting with a handgun.

I found that all of the info needed was on their state web site including a copy of the statutes and laws so you can read them verbatium. I acctully printed them off and carryed it with me while I was there.

I did this before the .50 law whent into effect but I'm sure the web site has been updated.

Sorry I don't have the site book marked but I'm sure it can be found with a quick search.

I'll check it out on packing.org as well.Maybe the answer will be there.

The ban was just for the .50 BMG case design specifically. It is still legal to own the other calibers up to .600. In fact, the AR member Biggestgun designed a .599 inch cartridge to get the maximum allowable bullet diameter allowed. Big Grin And as for shotguns, I don't know of any limit on those, I see 12 gauges and such for sale at the gun store.

I am guessong here that you intended to type .499 inch,

am I correct? Or are you saying that 700 NE calibered

rifles are not allowed? Logic should rule them out, Big Grin but

politicians should not legislate them out! Mad

Nope, no error in typing it.

The link to the destructive device definition is below. I'm not sure how the Nitro Express rounds apply to it, not too sure if there are exceptions to this definition.

http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/dwcl/12301.php?PHPSESSID=ea50...a96201bdd61c48d14b50

12301. (a) The term "destructive device," as used in this chapter, shall include any of the following weapons:
...
(3) Any weapon of a caliber greater than 0.60 caliber which fires fixed ammunition, or any ammunition therefor, other than a shotgun (smooth or rifled bore) conforming to the definition of a "destructive device" found in subsection (b) of Section 479.11 of Title 27 of the Code of Federal Regulations, shotgun ammunition (single projectile or shot), antique rifle, or an antique cannon.....

So far, it applies to Military Ordnance. It takes a special exception ruling classifying Sporting Rounds. At this point, even if it's over 50 cal, a classified Sporting Round is legal. I believe Rob in LV had to jump through atf hoops to get his stuff legal and not declared as destructive devices.

California has banned guns chambered in 50 BMG only. Other .50 cal guns like 500 A Square and 510 Euro (improved version of 50 bmg) are still legal- for the time being.
We are allowed up to .60 cal without being a destructive devise so that makes 700 Nitro and 600 Nitro(.620") not California legal.

My 606 Mammoth cartridge is just under limit and has been classified as "sporting" by ATF. It is a good idea to have your over-50 cal wildcats classified before you run into problems with the feds. They seem to be on the warpath these days. Ask any CA dealer!

After Hillary's 8 year reign of terror I am sure that all rifles 50 cal and over will be destructive devices. Enjoy em while you can boys.

If you own a gun and you are not a member of the NRA and other pro 2nd amendment organizations then YOU are part of the problem.

If that could be done, there would be

many others banding together to do it.
