John55Proprietary Nitro Express Calibers
Which companies developed/introduced the various nitro express calibers. I know H&H developed the 500/465, WR introduced the .476, and I think Jeffrey introduced the .475 No.2, but I have no idea about the many other cartridges out there.
John
There's a difference between introducing it and having it a proprietary cartridge.
Alpin's Any Shot You Want have discussions by the various authors of most of the old NE cartridges.
For starters, there is the Eley version of .475 No.2 and the Jeffery .475 No.2. Different bullet diameters, etc.
Maybe someone else will put forth the effort to describe them all here, just not me!

John55Thanks,
Anyone know the origins of the .470, .500 3" and .577 3"?

465H&HLang is generally given credit for introducing the 470. I don't believe the 500 and 577 Nitros were ever propritory cartrdges but some one will surely prove me wrong. I think they were Eley creations.
465H&H
400/375 H&H
275 H&H
275 H&H Flanged
I think they were all proprietary
What about the 577 3 1/4" NE. Any ideas ?
Was it a Jeffrey creation prior to the 600 Nitro
to prove a concept ?

N E 450 No2470 Evans is correct.
The 500 and 577 were black powder cartridges before Cordite, along with the 450 3 1/4" and the 450/400 3 1/4".
I think they were already "Trade" cartridges as black powder rounds..
"proprietary" could refers to the kind of loading too.
For example also the 450 NE was a very old black powder cartridge. Later it was loaded with smokeless powder and became a proprietary number.
Almost any british caliber was in origin a proprietary number.Later the most succesful ones were chambered by other gunmakers

Not so as stated by someone above. Eley / Kynoch released cartridges
to everyone in the trade so how can they be classed as proprietary ?
