Just ran across the website for Clark Double Rifles. It appears to be the same company owned by the late Jimmy Clark of pistol shooting fame. Anyone know anything about these rifles? Not in a position to buy right now, just curious....

Another try at making a cheap double rifle: sleeved barrels, shotgun action, etc.
Prices begin at 5K.
It is impossible to make a quality double rifle for $5000.
Especially in the US labor market.

Chapuis does it with the UGEX. Last one I had built was well under $5k and they even changed the triggers so the left was out in front as I am left handed. But as we all know they only go up to 9,3x74R.

There a lot of double rifles made for 5K or there abouts chambered for 9.3X74R and smaller, but most are O/U, and the others are are replicas things like Pedersoli, 1873 Winchester Kodiak designed by Trail Guns armory and others of the same ilk. Many of the 5K S/S doubles are very well made and very well regulated.

Once you pass upwards of the 9.3X74R doubles 5K is a down payment!

PS: I would not want to trust most doubles that cost 5K or less to take on a lion or Buffalo in tight bush!

I agree with everything Mac said. But, a 9.3 x 74 might be an ok cat gun. I'd rather use a .416, but that's just my preference. I have both.

Cal, I have a very old Stevens single shot .22 that'd I'd swap out IF you toss in a kicker to even it up.

LAVACA, There is nothing wrong with the 9,3X74R cartridge, at least for what it was designed for. Most all of the double rifles made that are chambered for that cartridge are well made, and reliable firearms. That is because that is a very popular cartridge in Europe for hunting very large wild boar, and eastern block bear. That fact has nothing to do with it’s use on African dangerous game as the best choice.

What I was commenting on was Cal’s comment that it being impossible to build a quality double rifle for $5K. What he meant was, I think, is that a big bore to be used on dangers game can’t be built for $5K RETAIL!

On that point I totally agree with Cal, however, Many well made working double rifles ARE made for $5K or less, rifles that are very dependable, and in chamberings that are perfectly matched to even elephant, and cape buffalo. They just can’t be sold for that $5K to the final end user. When you add the profit for the maker, the shipping, and the import tax to the distributer, then his profit, shipping again to a dealer, then his profit, the final user will be lucky to get off with lass than $15K out the door!

The above is not a comment on Clark double rifles! I don't have any personal experience with this brand of rifle. My comments are on a general opinion of cheap doubles mentioned by others in this thread only.

Cal, I do indeed have a Baikal in 30-06.

I shot Snowwolfe's both in stock form and after he'd had some work done and did some load development and was amazed at the change and at the accuracy. His is a tack driver at 50 yards and I can't think of a more fun Kodiak deer rifle.

Mine seems to like 220 Hornady roundnoses at 2400 fps but I still need to get the 10+(!!!!) pound trigger fixed. After that and a few more adjustments I hope to have a DR that isn't afraid of salt spray, mud, or endless drizzle and that doesn't scare my wallet if I drop it out of the boat! Plus, it's yet another excuse to experiment with my favorite type of rifles.

Bob,
Stan Jackson did the triggers on mine. If you get him to work on yours caution him not to go to light. With mine he had to rework them a second time to make sure they did not go off when I snapped the action shut. He also disarmed the auto safety.
