One thing my father in law taught me - NEVER have 'unswerving loyalty' to your political leaders - they don't always have your, or the interests of your country, at heart.

He was German. High rank, in a not terribly popular branch of the Wermacht. He regretted his 'unswerving loyalty' to the day he died.
