The story below is the truth:
A guy applied for a job at our factory. He wanted to be a CNC lathe operator. His papers seemed OK but he also seemed to be a bit slow. We thought he might just have a communication problem and took him on on a trial basis. While I was getting his instruction books sorted out, I asked him to stamp numbers on aluminium marking tags for material coming into the shop. I gave him a set of number punches ranging from 0 to 8. The tags he had to do were 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14 and 16. When I got back to him a while later, he had finished the 6, 7 and 8 tags but none of the rest and seemed to think he was done. I asked him why he had not done the rest and he said there was no number 9 in the set I gave him. I took the 6, turned it upside down and showed it to him. He turned red as a beet and blurted out that there definitely was no 10, 12, 14 or 16 in the set.
