Sigh...I didn't get it either, until reading the link.
FWIW, Exxon's name was ESSO, supposedly until they found out that the spoken word was a vulgarity in Japanese.

NormanConquestTrue that especially when one gets excited + starts talking fast.Back in the 60's + early 70's when we Texans would go to Europe we were treated different than Americans ;they honestly seemed to know that we were from another country + it was not the USA.I doubt we would get the same respect today, but who would?

lavacaWas born within a mile of the Rio, went home with a hispanic family due to an error by the nuns at the hospital, lived my life there until college, and still don't get it. Sorry!

john c.ok lemme see if i can clear this up. it is i now realize a regional expression. i heard it from an inmate during a transport a few years ago and just remembered it and thought it would be a good one to post. guess not.
in texas, new mexico, arizona etc (i have lived in all 3, two briefly) the term "ese" is as to the rest of the world "dude" or "guy".
so here, "que tal ese" translates to "whats up guy".
remember the old cheech and chong movies/tapes? you'd hear "looking good ese" and so on.
the joke is a play on words. she was told to "do" an essay(written paper) over the weekend so being blonde she "did" an ese. simple as i can make it. like i said, i shoulda realized it a regional thing. ese

I got it.
I found it a funny play on words, language, ethnic background. Maybe it is a bit dependent on ones age too.
Of course I loved the picture of a work crew at lunch setting around in their "vato loungers" that went around a few years ago.

NormanConquestYep,descriptive nomenclature changes over the years,I.E,when I am off in thoughts,I am 'gathering wool' + one of my favourite expressions is "Suffering Cats".The past is another country;they do things differently there.

john c.my son is in construction and has his own business and a few years he was getting to know a new crew after work and one of em said "choo like beer boss?"
son said sure.
"what kind you like? bud or bud lite?"
son said modelo, dos equis, tecate
"what? why you drink that mexican shit, we don't"
was part of living the american dream to them, getting to drink bud or bud lite
