As a kid over in Germany,my Oncle Jacob + Tante Rita had a bakery/butcher shop in Nuremburg. My dad tried to help Tante Rita in making some pastries that involved one dollop of orange marmalade in each. When he was putting too much marmalade in one,she would rap him with a wooden spoon. (I grew up knowing what that wooden spoon was for + it was not just for stirring.)But then those old folks had survived 2 wars + knew the reason for frugality. After war 1,since Oncle Jacob was a butcher, the occupying forces allowed him to keep one knife.Anything resembling a weapon was seized.
