Got this from Peter Schickely of P.D.Q. Bach fame.It's a groaner so don't blame me...In olden times the natives would gather on the beach by the Mediteranian ocean + build a bonfire + throw flutes into the fire.It came to be known as the Mediteranian flute fry.
