A buddy from Florida swears this works.
Go to Home Depot or Wal-Mart and buy a can of black spray paint, any kind, the cheaper the better, so also try Dollar Store, Big Lots, etc.
Go home and stir up the ant mounds and the area around them with stick.
Spray 1/3 to 1/2 can on each ant mound and surrounding turf, covering fairly well.
Once the Ants realize they live in black neighborhoods, they quit working and start killing each other

Alberta CanuckYeh, and I've heard that when you quit letting the fire ants eat the greenery you provided around their mounds, they come out in hordes and burn out their own ant holes... The federal government then gives them $150 Million to rebuild with.
And charges YOU for all of it, plus bureaucratic overhead to deliver the money to them and cover the Congressional skim.

The only problem is that those who don't die will all go on welfare.
