Gerhard.DelportRompin Malaysia - Sailfish
Welcome to Rompin
The jetty on the river front
They are serious about conservation and looking after this valuable resource
Our skipper Sam (the sailfish whisperer)
Charles Lee - owner operator of Hook on C Adventures
Pitching a live bait to a sail close to the boat ensured I am onto my 1st Sailfish
The Sustain 5000 with 30lbs Suffix 832 performed flawless
Its very early in the season and the water is still very "choppy" compared to later in the season.
The bait fish has not started schooling yet and this made it difficult finding the sailfish as they are spread over a big area.
All we could do is chase birds when we found them... Even on the radio the skippers mentioned the "lazy sailfish" is hard to find.
I had another pick up on live bait and the sailfish ran like crazy stripping 200m off the reel....
Must say I love to hear the drag working on a reel.
Unfortunately the hook pulled during a jump.
Day 2
An hour's run out to the FAD's to get bait.
And then we started hunting for birds again. The water is still very choppy.
Find birds we put out our baits two on balloons and one without.
We got a pick up and the sailfish exploded and tail walked and started stripping line and the rate of knots.
After 3 min fight the fish jumped again and broke the leader...
We went back to the same area and around 30 min later we had another run again on the rod without a balloon. (I really hoped to get one on the Blackhole Magiceyes rod but it just did not turn out that way)
The Penn Battle and Snapper rod was the lucky setup for the day.
After the 1st jump the fish went deep and we started chasing...
This sail kept running deep...
And finally after around 10min I have her at the boat we realized the fish is tail wrapped.
We got her out of the water for a quick photo
Then back in the water to revive her until she kicked strongly
Rompin has an amazing fishery for sailfish
I can understand why during the peak of the season groups fishing for 4 or 5 days catch as many as 54 sails.
Hook to C Adventures looked after all my needs as well as giving me a true taste of what the local food as to offer.
