Cal SibleyThis is just about the time of year the Potomac is swamped with herring. Of course they die after spawning. They come into the Tidal Basin by the millions die, rot and create quite a stink right during the Cherry Blossom Festival. When they first came in the basin as kids we'd go down and net hundreds. Our reward was we got to do it all over again a few weeks later when the bigger shad came in. It sure made childhood even more fun. Best wishes.

rob pHere in Rhode Island, they just banned the recreational and commercial taking of herring, and, apparently eels as well. Striped Bass bait! Going to have to use clam bellies this year...
