It’s pretty amazing fishing down there. Wife and I went a few years ago. We raised 50 sails in three days of fishing. Hooked 25 of them and landed 19. Would have landed more but I was messing around with a fly rod part of the time. We also raised a marlin but he never would take the pitch bait. We also landed about 30 yellow fin tuna and 6 mahi mahi. We were actually fishing with Big Bouy charters but the folks we talked to with casa Vieja were having the same results.

I did that trip with Tim Herald, Mike Jines and Jason Campbell a couple of years ago and it was absolutely amazing! We caught 20 plus sailfish a day not to mention marlin, tuna, dorado, bonito etc. Accommodations and food were excellent and the bar was abuzz every night with stories of the ones we landed and the ones that got away. 5 stars!

I’ve been and had a great trip.
However, pay attention to dates times and moonphase
Their overall catch rates are WAY down from a few years ago. They do a great job of posting their fishing reports on their website
It’s in Excel (original format)
Great days are still possible but the “25 sails per day” is clearly not true any longer
I will say I had a nearly 100 fish day there in Jan before the full moon
Pacific Fins is also excellent

That’s good to see. Numbers rebounding this year I see which is great.
Average day there is a very good day in most places for sailfish.
I had one of those truly legendary days there! So many sails behind the boat you literally were catching 3-4 at a time as fast as possible and you literally could have had 10 at a time if it was physically possible. Packs of sailfish waiting behind the boat and as soon as you could clear rods and get bait back in…you had 3-4 more on. This went on for a good hour and a half. I think we may have caught 60 in a row in like an hour and something close to 100 that day. We had some 120 plus bites
It was crazy
When I said 25 sails per day average just to be clear for a few years (la Nina years I think ) like the average EVERY day was that high with many many 50-60 fish days and a few 100 fish days

I've been to Costa Rica twice, if you caught 4 - 5 in a day you had a good day. I don't think at Guatemala you catch as many Mai Mai or tuna. It's pretty much a sailfish area with an occasional Marlin. I'm excited, always good to see new country.
