Turkey in snow
Actually two turkeys if you look closely.

ALLEN W. JOHNSON - DRSS

Into my heart on air that kills
From yon far country blows:
What are those blue remembered hills,
What spires, what farms are those?
That is the land of lost content,
I see it shining plain,
The happy highways where I went
And cannot come again.

For years I thought turkeys were very good at hearing, seeing, and running from danger. They are, but observing them over time from deer stands, I've seen just how good they are at hiding unseen while danger passes nearby.

Couple of years ago I watched a hen nestle into a little hideyhole on a wooded hillside. Later a band of Mexicans came thru the woods driving deer. Two of them passed within 20yds of the hen and she never budged. Couple hours later she came out and walked away easily going straight up a very steep part of the hill.

Watching that made me go ... Roll Eyes

I occasionally jump turkeys when out walking along the river bottoms they hold real tight and flush like grouse. It scares the hell out of me every time and it makes the dogs jump too. It's amazing that they will hold so tight and are able to get off the ground so fast.
